I didn't see this posted before: The Pop go the Sixties show from 1969. Entwistle is playing a nice 4005.

I would say they were lip-synching because of the double-tracked Daltrey vocals and because Pete is not playing what is heard.

But interestingly, it sounds right on for what Moony is playing. I wonder if that was recorded on top of that. I also wonder if the 4005 is representative of what the Ox actually played on the track.

Same bass in both clips - a 4005 MG. Like mine!

This recording - used on this clip of "Miles" - is the rarer remix from the late '60s that has an additional bass overdubbed on it (it's also on a Polydor singles comp).

Now, if we could substantiate that the overdubbed bass is a 4005, then we'd be on to something.

To bad that when I saw them at the Rock Pile in Toronto in 69, he was playing his red p bass which I got to check out, and walked away from the show with 2 sets of roto's for free, but Pete was playing that sg at the show, and cut his wrist on the bridge doing his arm swings..16 Wem columns per side was the pa back then....R

I thought that the only recording where Enty used the 4005 was "Seeker". Of course I could be mistaken on that.

What do you all think of Entwistle's playing?

I mean no disrespect at all, but I just have not been very moved by his basslines. Apart from playing fast, I've not been impressed by his technique, style or sophistication. Maybe it's how the instrument is mixed in the recordings and I can't hear the lines very well?

At any rate, I like Geddy's or Paul's style much better.

Have you seen the Who Rocks America video? Or the Live at the Albert Hall dvd? If you've seen those and haven't been impressed, then he's obviously just not your cup of tea. Personally he's one of my top 3 or 4 of all time, but to each his own. FWIW, I don't think he really comes across on the albums, and I gather he agreed.

I do think John mimes brilliantly on that 4005 bass, but I'm biased because its sitting with some of his old amplification beside my tv!!!!!!

I believe it's a '66. The other one he had was a '67. These were both offered at the Sothebys auction in 2003.

Hi Mike - mine is the may 67 4005. There was also a double bound 4005 mapleglo at Sothebys, which was the 66. my pencil notes tell me that one went for £4,600 on the day (before all the fees and stuff!!) It would have been an even better day to come home with that too (!!!), but it was not to be. It was very beaten up, and that made me feel better ( I convinced myself it WASN'T just that I didn't have the money...!!!) I got to talk to Alan Rogan the Who's uber guitar tech backstage 2 years back, and he said that double bound he got for John in the early 70's, I think in New york. He also said the 4005 was the Rickenbacker john liked and felt was very underrated - alas I guess a bit of "rotosound" neck movement (!!!)put him off the 4001 series after his very first (which is on "can't explain", and the earlier High Numbers stuff)... that seems to be the implication in interviews, anyway! John bought my bass from new and kept it that way, which is pretty refreshing for a Who instrument....!!!!!!!!!
