I hate to sound like sour grapes here, but seeing that makes me glad I got my 21 fret '71 when I did. The high bid is already waaaaaay over what I paid for mine and its in better condition!
But it still looks like a nice bass...
Sergio, you awake out there?
Add another one to your tally of 21 fretters...
Thanks for letting us in on that one, Bob...

Hey Gene...you must be reading my mind..I was about ready to ask yourself and Sergio how this one compares to your own examples..When I saw it was from Texas, thought it might be yours.......I,ve been thinking about a 21 for a while, but this does seem a little high for the condition, even taking into consideration the rarity...I,ll be passing on this one...

Yeah, I wish that I could snap it up, but at this point I'm more than likely to be selling, not buying. I think it is a really nice looking bass, are those necks longer? I read that they weren't, but it sure looks a little longer to me, and that bidder looks real familiar, haha.
I guess the 72 that was really a 73 sold for big bucks, and that was not in very good condition either, this one is much better. that last bid I saw on the 72/73 was somewhere around $1600.00 to $1700.00

He should look familiar... But I'm sure that somebody else will end up with it, I'm more in the market for a blackstar or Tux at this point.

I've been wanting to get a 21-fret 4001 but the finish condition of this one is way out of my limit. Yeah yeah, I know I should never care about the big finish wears and scratches on a bass this old, but the "perfect skin syndrome" has been with me since I was born. So I'll pass on this one.

Good luck to the winner for a good deal...HEY, SOMEBODY HERE GO GET HER!!!

Hi Andrew!
Nope, that one's not mine, she just got a setup recently, and a new set of Rotos, and she's been in the heavy recording rotation lately! I don't ever want to sell that bass!
But this one looks like it had the thumbrest, but its gone now... Another thing the pics don't/won't show is how much relief is in the neck. With those old ones, if they've been sitting in a closet for 15 years with the truss rods set the same way, it might be a bit hard to get the neck to straighten up right. But it looks like he's getting some action on it...

So that we might discuss this later after it disappears from Ebay, here are a number of selected photos.

Yes I was actually the first to bid, because one can never have enough basses.

Hey, if I had the money, I'd be bidding!
dedgoat's right, Rickenbackers belong to the PEOPLE!!!
I wonder if we couldn't figure out some more about these 21 fret basses if we had more of them "in the family" here at the Rick Forum.
I'd like to know if they were all that was available in a 4001 back around 70-71, or if they were an option..., how many were made, and when they stopped.

blatently these 21 fretter's were just what that batch was like at the time, i can't see a guitar maker offering 1 extra fret as an option
