The tubes in old amps do compress the sound a little ...

most of us now play bass with solid state amps and or direct input ... with that you need compression ... especially if you play slap bass at all ...

I never really use compression, even when i slap. About the most i do then is roll off on the tone a little.

If you don't use compression when playing slap & running direct to the PA, don't be surprised when you get shut down.
Sound guys hate those red lights!

I used a Punch Factory for a while and liked it but I found it to be poorly built. The input jack became unreliable - I had to wiggle the plug to get it to activate.

Now I use the compressor in my Bass Pod XT Live.

Ha, I guess that makes sense. But im not really gigging yet (sadly). Trying to find a band and what not now.

As far as on my amp. I try to keep the red light from poping up. Im not saying it doesnt from time to time. But normally im okay.

On those occasions where I find I need to run a compressor I use the ONLY one I've ever found - a RNC compressor. RNC stand for Really Nice Compressor. Look up some reviews online and believe every word of it. IMO it is the best compressor you can buy for under $2000 (they run about $150 used and $300 new)
