If you like the Squire Tone, or Paul D'Amour's from early Tool, I highly reccomend a Mesa Bass 400/400+...

I have the older 400(came with 6 6550's instead of 12 6L6's) and it sounds like heaven..gets a much meaner grind than an Ampeg..

Ampegs have a low-mid growl when pushed, but the Mesa'a have this gritty top-end when they overdrive..it's a little harsher than the SVT, and much more articulate to my ears

Paul D'Amour used a Mesa Bass 400 to record his 4001CS on a small Tool album known by the name of "Undertow"..Image

Mesa does have some strict rules. I know for a fact dealers can't ship a new mesa boogie amp from one Mesa dealer to another Mesa dealer outside a 50 mile radius. Even if they're the same store and owned by the same company.

Played with my band tonight. We have a new ``practice room`` a lot bigger than we had before. Sad thing was that the ``small`` Ampeg B200R was not up to the task...Standard ``rock set up: 2 guitars, a drummer and me...Guitars use Marshall's w/ 4x12 cabs...Spent the whole evening trying to get a decent sound...All I was getting was mud ( w/ the P bass ) or a guitar like sound ( NO bottom end at all ) with the RIC...Amp master volume was set on at 8/10...a lot of unwanted distortion...Quite dissapointing but I had an idea it would be like this...

I have been looking at Mesa stuff for a while and read very good comments ( thanks guys ) but price is.....high !!

I was thinking of Ampeg...something like an SVT Classic amp with 2 cabs of 1 x 15 each...I like to place the cabs opposite corners in the room as they ``fill up`` better....Or a single 2 x 15 cab ??

Any ideas or comments ??

Marc, have you tried running an extra speaker cabinet off of your combo? It will be "louder", and will fill the room better if you space the speakers apart.

I play through a much slagged off Hartke 3500 with 4x10 cab with a Digitech preamp on the Sunn setting and a parametric EQ. Our guitarist has a Laney and Les Paul. When he gets a bit wild, the Rick just blasts! That usually makes him back off a bit. Down to the monstrous bite and clank I think... Ha ha ha!
What d'ya mean... the bass is TOO loud!

I've played the Walkabout Scout and liked it immensely. But I got a helluva good deal on a Genz Benz NEO combo on ebay and I absolutely love it. I highly recommend it.

Yes. One of my favorite features in some Mesa amps is that the customer can customize them (maybe a little more pricey, but pretty cool). The hardwood options on the amps are amazing.

So, I gigged last Thursday night with my 'new' 400+...in a word: magnificent. I played it through my Sunn 4x10...couldn't turn it up past 4 due to concerns for the audience and the building's foundation.

When I was a kid going to high school in Mesa, Az., I never would have thought to put the words "Mesa" and "Boogie" together...

Nothing beats tube watts, especially for bass. IMHO.

Do you play little games with it? Like, not looking at it for a while, and then, looking at it, to see if you still like it?
