It just shows what we've known all along - There's nothing like a Rickenbacker!

It's fascinating to see just how much others don't know about Ricks!
Such as: "Are all Rick active?"

And just why would one want to achieve the sound of a Rick bass without actually owning one? You're not saving money by buying a cheap bass & forever yearning for a good one! You'd actually spend more a waste a lot of valuable time.

This just goes to show that we all have to do more educating regarding these fine instruments.

David, you're right man. Nothing like a Rick, nothing feels, sounds fits or looks like a Rick.
I've turned into a kind of Dr. Rickenbackernstein, but I'm looking for hints and help

There are some other high end boutique basses that are very high quality instruments.

The Rickenbacker 4003 is very consistent in quality and it has a sound that is different than other basses. One bass that nails the Rickenbacker sound is that green bass that Squire plays. Also they are some other basses that are fine instruments that have a quite different sound ... like the Musicman basses, and Warwicks, etc ...

All true, for the 4000, 4001, 4002, 4003, 4005 models, but not so much for the 4004. Especally not mine.

My 4004 is certainly not a 4001 sound, but it's still clearly a Rick. It just took a while for me to find the "sweet spot" on the EQ to bring out its flavor.

A guy once told me: "Ricks need a lot of eq".
And I thought: "Yeah, to sound like a Fender!"

I modified my 4004 basses ... I wired them both volume, volume, tone ... My 93 4004L5 has 2 hb1 pickups and 1000k ohm pots ... it has a real Rickenbacker treble bite ... still a little different than a 4001/4003 ... my 98 4004ci5 is also wired in a vvt configuration but with 500k ohm pots ... that bass is more mid growlly than pretty much any other bass I own ... but it still has a Rickenbacker tone ... Also my 4003s5 is a little different sounding because of the 15k ohm single coil treble pickup ... the one Ric bass that has the most vintage Rickenbacker character is my 2001 4003 4-2-5 bass ... with the 2 11k ohm single coil pickups ...
