A friend's amps

Post by jdogric12 »

A coworker recently purchased a Marshall Mosfet Lead 100 head and 4x12 cab and would like to know what the general concensus/opinion is on this amp.

He is also asking for opinions on Sovtek Russian made tube amps from the eighties. Thanks gang!

What Sovtek models? The MIG amps are pretty cool.

The Sovtek MIG 50 was based on a bassman, but with higher voltages so it sounds a bit stiffer than your typical tweed bassman. The pots and jacks were very cheap. This is a good modding platform amp.

The MIG 50H Midget was based on a Marshall JCM 800 2203/2204 circuit, with some minor differences, using higher plate voltages, and using 5881's instead of EL34's. It was the best made of the Sovtek amps, and sounds quite good too. I have one of these, but will be selling it in the future once I get a project Marshall JCM800 amp done. My brother has one too, and he does want to sell it now if your friend is interested? Email me for info on it.

The Mig 60 was loosely based on the Plexi marshall, but again, with much higher voltages. The circuit in this one is brutal on the EL34 power tubes, and nothing really holds up in these amps except the Winged C, or NOS EL34's. (not NOS Siemens tho) The Sovtek EL34G that these came with was a very poor quality tube and would often go into runaway. This happened with the one my brother used to have. The amps sounded pretty cool, if a little bit buzzy, but they were just very unreliable.

I don't know much about the Sovtek bass amps as in the pic above.

Guys, please re-read Jason's post - the Sovteks he is asking about are TUBES not amps.

Jason, there are a number of websites that list tubes for sale along with a short review of the tube's characteristics. I'll check my Favorites on my home computer later and see if I can find a couple for you.

As far as the Marshall Mosfet Lead 100 head is concerned, there are 60+ reviews of it at Harmony Central:
