I have an acoustic Charvel Surfcaster bass. It projects fairly well and sounds nice through an amp. They're somewhat hard to find, but they're cool. They even have the cat's eye sound hole like that 4005.

I have an Alvarez. New at a little more than twice your budget, used they probably are very inexpensive. I have used it for recording and the occasional "unplugged" (plugged in) gig with other acoustic guitars. A friend even played it at a band gig and I'm shocked how well it did. I have owned between 10 and 20 basses and it was the best sounding I had owned before I got my Rick, which, um, well, is quite a lot better.

You do have to be prepared for different volumes for the different strings and neck positions on an acoustic/electric bass guitar.

Best I've played is the Alvarez. I really enjoy acoustic basses, ever since I saw Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Cassady come to town as Hot Tuna and blow us all away. But beware of pickups on acoustic basses. The Alvarez does pretty well, especially with help from pedals, but I sometimes think you'd be better off miking an acoustic bass for recording purposes...
