The Accent, unfortunately, has proven to be too subtle for my playing. My Jags and JMs have about a tone and a half (a semitone is bare minimum). But my Japanese reissue burst Mustang allows me to whack off about a fifth whenever I want to go full Trova Toxic Avenger!

Dean, I think that vibrato is what made the 'Stang so popular with punkers and nuevo wave-o groups back in the '70s and '80s...
Yep, George. a 12er. I've gotta get started on it! Completely forgot that I'd stashed it under my living room sofa! Gotta pick a color that goes good with checkerboard binding, now...let's see...
I think that "New York's a Lonely Town" By Pete Andreoli and Vince Poncia (a coupla Joizy Lads if ever there were two) is well-sung and -produced, but my problem with it is a "bad, cynical, jump-on-the-bandwagon-a coupla-stops-late" lyric writing job.
How many surf songs used sleigh bells and a glockenspiel in the arrangement? NYALT is the only one to my knowledge...Brian Wilson eventually did, but it wasn't until 'Pet Sounds" a full 18 months later!

Except by Pet Sounds Brian wasn't writing surf songs anymore. That is still one of my favorite albums.

Welllll, there WAS "Surf's Up"...
I bought PS on its initial release date in May 1966; still have my copy. I was blown away. But of course, the second side of "Summer Days and Summer Nights" was a precursor and good indication of where he was headed.

That was from SMILE. And I wouldn't call those lyrics surf music, but I know you know that and you're just messing about. I'm glad he finished SMILE. I really enjoyed hearing that album.
I loved hearing from Brian about how much Mike hated the album and how Carl and Al were resistant to it. Then all these years later to hear the other Beach Boys say how "special" they knew the album was going to be. Talk about a dysfunctional family.

I saw Brian's wife and kids a few minutes ago, outside the Beacon, where he's playing tonight and tomorrow night. I may go tomorrow night. Tickets are still available. And I may pop by around 10:30 with my copy of PS as one of the crew said that's when the show finishes up. Would be nice to get autographs from Brian and Al.
This is off the record
Glen, I saw Brian in 1999 at the Warfield in San Francisco. The guy sitting next to me introduced me to Melinda at intermission. She was very cool. Bought me a beer and explained what every photo in the program was about. She was very nice.

Speaking of sleigh bells, a friend of mine once "wrote" and produced a Surf version of the Nutcracker Suite that is occasionally performed during the holidays in Minneapolis. Yes, it was called "The Surfcracker." It actually plays pretty well in surf style.
Wonder if Tchaikovsky had a crazy nickname. Hard to picture him with the beach crowd, but then again, the same went for Don Rickles...but I saw the movie with my own eyes.

George, you neeeeeeeeeeeed it, I got it. Go to http://www.primadonahue.com/ and enter the weird world of Michael Donahue. Follow the "Jerungdu" link on the left and there you will find a link to The Surfcracker page. He has some MP3s available there. (Sorry, he uses framesets so I can't post the precise link...but that's okay because his site is fun to, um, surf.)
