Shipping a Rick Amp

Post by libratune »

Hey there, pardners. I've got a word of advice for anyone thinking of buying or selling a larger Rick vintage amp via UPS, FEDX or any other freight-delivery deal - and this includes Transonics - PROP UP THE POWER TRANSFORMER before you pack the amp. Why? because, unlike Fenders, Rick used 1/4" plywood as the chassis board on which the transformers are mounted. You can pack that baby with bubblewrap from here to kingdom come, but when it gets bounced once on the UPS truck, the laws of gravity take over and that plywood will not hold. I have had to rebuild the chassis-board of 3 shipped Rick amps, including a Transonic 100, due to the lack of support for the heavy power transformer.

Do the transformers hang from board? I picked up a tip from Mark Baier of Victoria Amps and now when I ship an amp, I pack the amp upside down which also serves to help protect the tubes....then I pray that the UPS guy can read the This End Up sticker!

That's good advice, guys.

Thanks for the welcome, guys. I don't know why it took me so long to get here. Too busy minding my Ricks, I guess.
