Every now and then you'll see a pawn shop deal on eBay, with a listing, and you can tell they haven't made the effort to find out what they have.
If it's in your area you might get lucky, but once it's listed for the world to see, forget it...

I agree that knowledge attained by sellers as a result of surfing the internet is reducing the probability of obtaining a good deal. However, that does not mean that it's impossible to find a fine instrument at a great price.
It takes a bit of effort and perseverance but I have done quite well overall. I have even managed to get a few bargains on ebay, strange as that may seem.

Wow, Brian you are one lucky guy.
My best scores - 1967 Gibson Melody Maker (inc. OHSC) - $60 (at a flea market), 1976 Fender P - $210, 1964 Gretsch 6070 bass - $100. And my $750 Shadow (craigslist, not a pawn shop) wasn't bad either... But I'm waiting for that $300 RM1999 like the one "artnightbass" BIN'ed on eBay... remember that one?

Great scores Ilan.
I completely missed the RM1999, otherwise at that price, it would have been sharing a spot with my little collection of Ricks.

I put new Roto Sound strings on my 4001 last night and this bass has come alive. It is fantastic. What a great sound and what a pleasure to play. My hat is off to Rickenbacker for producing such a great instrument!

Judging by this listing on ebay, it would seem that I did very well on the price that I negotiated.
