Looking for some pickups

Post by will_nesbitt »

I'm looking for a specific type of pickup. As some of you might recall, I've started playing metal. Now, I have 4 guitars. None of which are particularly suited to the sound of screaming, wailing, heavily distorted and full on sound of the whole scene. Now, I would look for a metal specific guitar, but I just can't afford a decent quality one, which is what I'm after. I know there are BC Richs, Jacksons, etc... that are very cheap at around the £200 mark. but that's still out of my price range. So I'm gonna have to mod one of my existing guitars. My electro acoustic and the classical are out of the question, I would never dream of doing anything to my Ric to change the sound of it as it's perfect the way it is, so the honours fall on my Dano u2-56. So here's my plan:

I want some new pickups for it. Now, if I can find one humbucking lipstick pickup (to replace the bridge pickup) that has a coil tap (so I can get back the sound of the original single coil pickup if I want it), that would be great! Now, a quick google found some humbucking lipsticks, but they were only available to America and had no coil tap (I think that's what you call it).

Now, has anyone seen one around with those kind of specs? Or does anyone know any pickup builders willing to build me some? Or does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks all
I'm a lefty...

Will, you might inquire with Lace (http://www.agi-lace.com/index.php) to see whether such a configuration is even possible. Their California Convertible™ Transensor® (http://www.agi-lace.com/electric_pickups/transensor/transensor_specs.php) has the features you want but it's in a standard humbucker configuration.

The absolute best metal pickups of all time, (for my money anyway) are the old mid 80's Jackson p'ups that came in the "A" model Charvel/Jackson guitars. The ones with the plain black plastic covers with the embossed "Jackson" logo.

I have a mid 80's Charvel/Jackson and those p'ups absolutely scream!!!

You see them on ebay often and usually don't fetch too much.

Ha! You got me thinking Will and I just bought a whole H/S/S set on ebay for $75 for a project guitar I'm working on.

These p'ups really sound awesome.
