"Two-tone" 4001's?

Post by uffe »

Hi,
has rickenbacker ever left skunk-striped necks natural (front and back) while coloring the wings of 4001 basses?

thanks

I think the only production finish that might look like that is the original Cheyenne with the walnut body wings glued to the maple neck-through. The backs of the early Cheyenne IIs aslo looked this way. But as far as paint on the body wings, I've only seen a few refinished Ricks done this way.

You might be referring to one that was recently pulled from eBay "because of an error in listing" that had black painted body wings, a red pickguard, and aftermarket pickups. The good news about that bass it that it is likely an early 73 or earlier, featuring checker binding, full width crushed pearl position markers, etc. Mixed blessing: good features with bad finish and gear.

"Bad finish" ain't no curse...it give you a chance to put on a good finish with no guilt!

Black or white binding?

The bass I'm going to have refinned has checkered binding(white) that was installed at the factory sometime around May of 1973....it's going to be awesome.

the cheyenne and lemmy bass are both natural. i was referring to two-tone in terms of finish (eg. blue wings, natural neck). i guess it answers my question.

thanks
