It started with one special model only and then spead to the whole line. Just don't ask me when exactly.

All I remember is using a spray can of matte epoxy paint on the hardware of a 620 Ruby to get the look; this guitar first went on display at the Musik Messe in Frankfurt.

I have never seen a '73 with black plastic so I would say between '74 and '75. My '75 4080 has black guards and TRCs.

My April 1974 4001 has a black 'guard and TRC.

Maurice Gibb had a white 4001 with black trim in the very early 70's. The first photo's are around '71 IIRC.

Also the 70s models with black trim had white neck binding chrome metal parts ... it wasn't until the 80s that they perfected black trim ... but the down side of black trim is the black powder coating on the metal parts didn't protect the steel as well and sometimes they would rust ...

Black trim is cool ...

BT is so eighties... but I love it on my Shadow, the epitome of black Trim Rics.

Dave - thanks for linking to that pic! BTW, there's a lefty white 4001 on eBay with a backwards black Plexi TRC - how rare is that?

Yes Ted, They are all plexi and screened from the back, ala vintage TRC's.

I have a black left-handed TRC that I am going to put on my Jetglo '79 4001 along with a black 'guard that I guess Tony will make for me....gotta call him first, LOL...
