80s thrash band from Virginia Beach. Paul always played Ric basses. I've been trying to buy one his for a few years now. The ******* is stingy.

I see absolutely no musical content at all in this trash. These people(and people who like their music...and I use the term very loosly)wouldn't know a good musician if they tripped over one! NUFF SAID

Saying "different strokes" is way different than saying "absolutely no musical content in all this trash".

If it is organized sound, you know, rhythm, form, melody, etc, then it's music.

Personally, I don't like all "organized sound", but that's my issue. Not the music's.

Would you call 4'33" "music", John? How about Revolution 9?

What about...

- Metal Machine Music? (Lou Reed)

- Music For Airport? (Brian Eno)

- early Kraftwerk

- anything by Crass?

Hey, my parents were always quick to tell me that the following rock 'n roll bands did not play real music:

- Ramones
- Led Zeppelin
- Alice Cooper
- Sex Pistols
- "Helter Skelter" by the Beatles
etc...

Of course "4'33"" is music. It is a brilliant. John Cage was amazing. Now is it the best thing ever? I wouldn't say so, but it is very clever. It is in 3 movements, and has instructions for what the pianist is to do, (i.e. open the piano, close the piano).

"Revolution #9" is music as well, there is structure and form. Again, when you organize sounds, you have music. You can have organization plus random chance events like John Cage, but still it's music.

"metal machine music" makes me laugh whenever I hear it. I've only listened to portions of it one time, but if you think about it, Lou Reed used the double album format to give structure to his seemingly random noises. On cd I wonder if it has the same effect. Or affect if you think it's pretentious!

You may not like it, or get it, but it's still music. Some you may find more listenable than other. Your mileage may vary.

I think keeping an open mind is key really. We all have stuff we like more than other stuff, but to say something like "I see no musical content in this trash..." is not something that I would accept as valid criticism in any of my classes.

I teach K-5 general music using the Orff Schulwerk approach.

Never listened to "Music For Airports", but I dig "No Pussyfooting" by Fripp & Eno.

I once saw John Cage perform for an evening. He was doing the 'soundtrack' for a Merce Cunningham performance in Columbus, Ohio back in the early '80s. I really liked the piece he did with four water filled conche shells.

One of my favorite bands, The Melvins, put out a limited autographed 7 inch called "S... Sandwich... and You Just Took A Bite". I got home all excited to hear the new songs. I put it on the turn table and sat down while the opening pops jump out of the speakers. Then I waited some more. And some more. Soon I realized that I had indeed taken a bite of this sandwich. For the record was blank. It was pressed, mind you, it had grooves, but was void of any sounds. I read later that it was a "note for note" cover of 4' 33"

ps. A copy of this record once sold for over two hundred bucks on ebay.
