Bye John

Post by lennonon »

26 years later and it STILL SUCKS as much as it did in 1980. MORE. Imagine John Lennon with the internet, Pro-tools, the Bush Wars Part 1 & 2 - participating in THE ANTHOLOGY. Jamming with his old friends. Writing a song to George.

On December 9, 1980 I was 12 and my father was on business in the US. I snuck school and went to the Dakota and all I remember are these tall "OLD" people weeping out loud. SOBBING LOUDLY. That and, as a kid, I got close enough to see a big bullet hole in the doorman's glass booth and it scared me to death.

It sucks MORE. F-Chapman.

Those of us in the Beatles fan/collecting world don't call John's assassin by name. It's best to refer to him as 'Lennon's killer'.

Let's not give him any spotlight on his notoriety.

Funny you say that Kris. Bobby Kennedy never said the words assassinate when referring to President Kennedy. He always referred to it as "the events of Dallas".

Michael,

Do you really think Lennon would still be doing sleep ins, bagism events, 50 acorns, primal therapy etc... I think John would have mellowed very nicely into middle age. Nothing wrong with that either. By 1980 he had done his work. I wouldn't have expected more from him.

There's one thing about John that always remained consistent. He was unpredictable and hard to peg. I loved reading stories about him. He along with Winston Churchill were two of the most interesting persons in recent history. John had a leg up on Winston, because he had fans all around the world, unlike Winston.

John was also a man of many facets, but his ability as a man to reach out and connect to the common man was unsurpassed by no one. I still miss him. His memory will live on, and I will continue to smile at my fond memories of John; warts and all.

John Lennon came to Syracuse NY in the spring of 1971. I believe it was in support of an Indian tribe and some situation they were having, that for the life of me I cannot remember. He was actually here another time for Yoko's "art" exhibit at the Everson Museum. Anyway I was a senior in high school and was taking photography and like the rest of Syracuse knew he was staying at the Hotel Syracuse. I took the loaner camera from school and went down to the hotel and sat in the lobby. There were only a handful of people there which I thought somewhat odd given who was staying there. I don't remember what time I arrived there but late in the evening he blew through the door with Yoko and a few others. They were both dressed all in black and made a beeline for the elevator. I jumped up out of my seat and ran over to take a picture. By now they were walking into the elevator. I raised my camera , and I know this sounds like some cliche, but being so nervous at being so close (ten feet) to a Beatle I had left the lens cap on. I took it off as fast as I could and raised the camera to take the shot and in that moment just before I got the camera fully raised in front of me his eyes locked with mine and he said in that English drawl "I'm not Tom Jones ya know" ... and the door slid shut. Don't think I didn't kick myself in the *** for a very long time. I'll probably do it again when I'm done typing this. That fall I went to NYC and saw George & Ringo at the Bangladesh concert. It wasn't until 2001 or 2002 (I'm not sure what year it was) that I went to Boston to see Paul. He sounded unbelievable. I don't know what it is about that band that touches so many people but I am one of them and better for it.

I believe very few will regard Yoko's passing.

Not to be uncaring, but in a paper analysis, many regard her as a talentless enigma who was a driving force in the Beatles breakup. Furthermore, her influence greatly harmed her husband's solo career.

Alex, all probably true, but she is still a huge part of their story. And what an interesting, riveting story that is. It's all part of the fabric, good or bad.

I wonder how Lennon history would be written if he had been taken from us while living with May Pang?

I don't care what anyone thinks of Yoko... John LOVED HER with a reverence and abandon that most women dream of receiving from their husbands. She completed him in ways none of us will ever know or should know.

Since I'm in a bad mood anyway, I'll whip this one out there...

I understand what makes Yoko an easy target, but I disagree with the notion of her being talentless. She is a very challenging artist who was making a good living on her own as an artist, not a waitress, before so many of the ignorant among us came to view her only as she relates to the Beatles, always comparing her work to that of the Beatles. (...and the Beatles win again!) It's the old Dragon Lady nonsense being re-hashed again and again, and for these folks there is always a treasury of Li'l Abner comics to be consoled with. That's an Al Capp reference. You can reduce her work to a bunch of lousy squeals and shreiks and ridiculous objects, but you probably can't do what she does, either. I love poking fun at her sheer weirdness, but I also like and admire it, and I don't think Lennon was an idiot to have understood and admired it as well.

My two cents. Score one for John who can't speak to this point anymore.

Mark...I have read too many time the Yoko quote "...John and I are artists..." to have me believe John fans are the only ones comparing her work to his.

Unless John got some kind of wakeup call, it's a fair bet he woudn't have lived this long. He and George smoked like chimneys. And George didn't even make 60.

Then again, Keith Richards somehow did.

Yeah yeah, I'm WELL aware of GH's and Beatledom's standing on mentioning Mark David Chapman (Yes, I wrote it, GASP). In case you guys are unaware, some ****** has made a movie about that miserable SOB. Soon the mere mention of him will be as common place as mentioning Lee Harvey Oswald.

Painful but true. I PERSONALLY agree with George that he is "he-who-shall-never-be-mentioned", but it's not the way it's going, isit?

My compromise is to put a profanity in front of his bleeding name whenever it DOES come up

I don't worry much about naming him. His name is now his curse, and I'll name Mark David Chapman in the same breath as Judas, Benedict Arnold and Satan. I mean, who would want to BE them? I say go ahead and name the creep...it serves him right.
