Davie Allan And The Arrows...pulled out the fuzztone at last band practice and did "Blue's Theme" pretty cool tune. Davie Allan is considered to be a link between surf and psych instrumentals doing a lot of soundtrack tunes for 60's biker movies. There's a several of his videos on mytube..besides Blues Theme, check out his take on Peter Gunn.

Is "96 Tears" by ? and the Mysterians any sort of offshoot of Surf music?

I think 96 Tears falls more into the area known as "Garage Music" which is where surf music falls somewhat as well. It's a vocal also which rules it out. That said it's a great tune and would fit well in a surf set if the band does vocals as well as instrumentals. btw: there are a couple of videos of the tune on youtube..original and a newer one when the band did a reunion thing...

Kathy Marshall..First Lady Of The Surf Guitar...not often listed but one heck of a surf guitarist was Kathy Marshall..I believe known in the 60's as Queen Of The Surf Guitar..obvious nod to Dick Dale being the King. She played in and around Orange County and at the time created quite a local stir for her playing. She shared the stage with many of the hot surf bands of the time including Dick Dale. I do not believe she ever made a recording but I would LOVE to find anything she might have done..just in case someone out there might have a recording! Being a female, Kathy had 2 strikes against her in the male dominated surf scene of the 60's..her talent got her through Saw her play in the mid 60's opened for Eddie And The Showman..as I recall Eddie's band backed her up.

You have got to hand it to those Cleveland guys. It gets cold here in winter but we don't have to contend with snow and ice.

On our recent visit to the US we went to Hampton Beach NH. Quite a few guys in the water despite the freezing conditions and the cold weather hadn't really started. I would have loved to have hired a board and gone for a surf just to say I've surfed the Atlantic but time didn't permit. Maybe next time.

History of surf style picking: Dick Dale invented surf music case closed. The rapid staccato style of picking he introduced was likely taken from the musicians he heard as a youngster..born in Lebanon one would expect he heard a lot of double picking and eastern tonalities so often heard in this style. While reverb and the vibrato bar are other major parts of the instrumental surf sound, remember that on Surfers Choice DD's first record, the outboard reverb had yet to be invented and there was no vibrato bar action. Dick still plays without a vibrato bar...but lots of reverb!

Two Cool Yule Surf (one vocal one instrumental) Lp's worth going out for. 1) The Beach Boy's Christmas Album (Little Saint Nick is a classic) and 2)The Ventures Christmas Lp..very cool as each cut starts with a well known Ventures tunes then breaks into a Christmas standard...the cover of this one is also worth a look (talking to you Paul,,hah) very cool pic of multiple Ventures model Mosrites. www.theventures.com/xmas2006.html Christmas Card from the Ventures..

I have him to thank entirely for my love of surf music, since he introduced the main elements I like most.

He's not even a member of the R & R Hall of Fame yet!

The Ventures put out an instructional record back in the '60s that I believe actually charted. Is this something worth seeking out? (Second question: Available on CD or not?). Not interested so much in the actual collectability, but rather the therein contained educational value).

I'm still relatively new to the guitar, so any sort of advice on a "Surf Primer" (book, CD or video) would be appreciated!

Ed...The Ventures did three instructional Lp's. "Play Along With The Ventures Vol 1,2,3. I believe these have been released on cd's. I have several copies on Lp of each volume..if you're interested you can contact me offline. In reality there are a few other books that would serve you better..IMO 1)The Best Of The Ventures-Hal Leonard ISBN 0-634-06195-X..this one is pretty cool and comes with a cd, 2) The Ventures Pipeline 25 Surfin Hits For Solo Guitar- Hal Leonard ISBN 1-56922-199-5 and 3)The Best Of Dick Dale Hal Leonard ISBN 0-634--06468-1. Also get some cd's of 60's surf bands..Rhino has a cool "Surf Box" that now goes for big $ as it's out of print but has a lot of stuff to cut your teeth on. oh yeah..turn the reverb ALL the way up.....to stun!
