Shoes. what are the shoes?
When someone say regarding Ric basses that the shoes are removed, what does that mean. Sorry for my ignorance.

Steve,
Not a stupid question at all....
They are referring to the chrome HORSE SHOE's the metal part of the HS pickups available on the current C64 bass...some players don't like the way it blocks the "sweet spot" when they play OVER the bridge pickup.

The only time a bass player gets noticed is when he stops playing.

Hi Steve,
It referrers to the style and construction of a specific type of Ric pickup.
Instead of having a cover over the strings the pickup has two "arms" that enclose the strings, like a horseshoe that has been bent over till the two ends almost meet. In the original pickup these arms were actual magnets, in the newer style they're more cosmetic.
This particular version is on a v63 and is the newer style.
