You can view the V63 and C64 basses as being "S" basses from the production point of view; no binding, dot position markers, no Rick-O-Sound. Historically, the "S" model (which I believe stood for "Special") was initially made to satisfy overseas orders (notably European distribution by Rose Morris in the UK) in the early/mid 1960s. Perhaps the most famous 4001S would be that leftie given to Paul McCartney (presented in the US, and not through Rose Morris) which was Fireglo with a standard headstock (which when applied to a leftie is "upside down").
The V63 models (1984? through 2000) are structurally 4003 standard with cosmetic features to look like the 63 "S" models. The C64 (2001? through current) is meant to look like Macca's with the "upside down" headstock -- even if it is right handed. I doubt you'll see a simplified "S" model run concurrent with the C64.

I can't say for sure but I think the 4001s and 4003s did not sell nearly as well as the deluxe version of the 4001/4003 ... the S models did not become sought after until they were discontinued ... the same is true for the 4002, and 4005 ... and most of the S models were neck through ... some of the 4001s models were set neck ...
God I hope the 4004 never gets discontinued ...
