Here's my recently "75ed" 4001.

I made the plexi pickguard & did just enough routing to change the pup location.
I also had to clear out a small "V" area for the neck pup volume pot. The ones that were in it were mini 500k pots & fit fine, but when I got the new harness the full size pot didn't quite fit.
It does make a bit of difference in tone, some different mid frequencies are accentuated now.

The new prewired harness I got from Pick of the Ricks (330k pots) REALLY make a big difference in the clarity. Harmonics really sing now.
I fell in love with the sound all over again.

The bass had a hard life before I got it & little was original, so I felt I could take a few liberties with the old girl.
Thanks again to Sergio for rewinding the original neck pup.
The bridge pup came from ebay, & the tailpiece is, of course, a Hipshot I got from Ron Plichta.

Actually, your V68 was the inspiration for the change, John. I have always like the closer neck pup spacing.
I never would have entertained this idea without all the differing views I've found here, so I guess I have everyone to thank as well.

Cool Kevin! I really dig it. I always liked the look of the chrome neck pickup rings against a black pickguard, to me it's one of the hallmarks of white 70's 4001's.

Thanks, guys. It was quite an easy change. A toaster in the neck would look even better, but that Sergio-rewound pup just sounds too good to replace!

The rehab was only possible due to the info & help from folks on this forum, not to mention the actual physical help rendered, so I can't take any credit for that except for the desire to "do the right thing".

Remember, I'd owned my 4000 for almost 20 years & still knew very little about Ricks in general until I found this place.
I owe you all a lot.
