I'll have to admit, I've never owned a rick with shoes, but if I did those babies would be coming off.(That's probably why I've never sought one out)

The shoes on mine are pretty thick. What really surprised me was how heavy they were when I removed them.
Pure cosmetic detail, made me alter my playing style, and extra weight. It just made sense for me and my playing technique to remove them. If I ever sell it they will be re-installed.

I had a CS and took the shoes off, and when I got a c64s I thought I would do the same, but after playing with them on a bit I realized that they changed where I pick.
I would always pick over the bridge pup, and I didn't get the sound I was looking for. The shoes make me pick up closer to the neck, and voila! that tone I was wanting came out!

I wish I had a horseshoe pickup on my 4001. To me it's functional - I anchor my palm on the cover when I play. I like the feel of the cold metal more than the hi-gain's plastic cover. Years of playing Fender basses (with the chrome plated covers) do that to you.
