Amp Favorites for Ric Owners

And here I tought I was just being fussy! Thanks Noel for the input, at least I know I'm not going crazy. I'll give you a heads up in a month since I'll be looking around for the perfect amp for my 650!

I too have been lookin fo rthe 650 magic.
Right now with the limited selection I have available at the local stores I have decided on a Fender Twin Reverb, but that is not final.

Aftre I get back from Russia I plan on making a couple trips to Pittsburgh PA and Cleveland Oh to check out some other amps - including Rivera and yorkville and Gibson.

I also am lookin for some other vintages of Twin reverbs to try, rather then the current reissue available...

The Marshall AVT20 and AVT50 also sound good with the 650, if you are into overdrive sounds. I personally prefer the Traynor YCV40 if playing clean to crunch. You can pick up a clean used AVT20 for $200 or less on eBay. If you like a lot of low end in your music, the closed cab AVT amps blow away the YCV40. The AVT amps also switch hit as a bass practice amp, especially if you want the sound of a tubed bass amp that is driven into distortion at less-than-lease-breaking volumes. Sort of that "My Generation" tone that John Entwistle got on a tubed guitar amp back in the 60's. If you like to crank your amp for the best tone, the Traynor may be too loud for most home situations. The AVT20 has a less efficient speaker that goes into distortion at considerably lower volume.

My 480 sounds great through my '74 Fender Super Reverb (silver face that has ben modded to blackface specs). Just wish I could crank the amp more often, but it still sounds so sweet at lower volumes also.

All the guitar & bass equipment in my band is mine. I play guitar. My bassist uses my Bass amp (Eden, with a 4x10 and a 1x15) I personally think any bass would sound good through this. He chooses to use my late '90's Alembic, and gets a very McCartney sound. I have tried my 4005 and 4002 through this amp and they CRANK! I have tried to talk him into using the 4002, because when he's tried it on our tunes, the sound is much beefier, better for a three piece. I don't know why he's a prefence for the Alembic (though the early '80's Ric has a really thick neck). Maybe he sees the Alembic as even more unique than the Ric. I played bass mid '80's, and used my 4005 through Ampeg stuff. Real "musical" tone, that. Oh. and I did some home demos w/the 4005, straight into the tape, using nylon strings. McCartney never got a more McCartney tone than that!

Wonder how a Ric 360 or 370 6-string would sound through the Fender '59 Bassman reissue or the Fender Custom Shop Bass Breaker (like the '59 Bassman, but with a tube rectifier and two 12's (Celestion Vintage 30)? Any opinion on whether either of those amps would make for a good blues combination?

I run my Rics through a Vox 60 watt Valvetronix. Normally I use the 360/12 and a Les Paul, with the LP going through a Marshall 50 watt Valvestate.

I remember seeing Selmer amps here in the states many years ago, but they were not common and I don't know if they were sold here. For some reason I seem to remember The Beachboys or some American band with them during the early 70's or 60's.

I don't know but there's a cool picture of them with all Ric stuff including Transonic amps on page 122 of Richard Smiths book. I think the're playing "The Pusher" in that photo.

Yes, it says "Division of Selmer" on the back of my late 70's Ampeg V-2.

They're allright, IMHO.

I don't know about Rics but V4's sounded great to me WAY back when I last heard one, better than Marshalls I thought, very thick sound. I bet a Ric would sound nice through one, would give it some bite. I know the basses sound great with ampeg Amps.

I think that was a different Selmer, they made band instruments like Saxes, Coltrane played one. And they almost ruined Ampeg according to the Ampeg book. Didn't know anything about Rock N Roll and the original owner didn't either.
