Ampeg V9 - for bass?

thanks Greg, maybe i'll just ask the tech to clean it up. on a side note, i picked up a early 70's V4 tonight, sounds fantastic. i'll probably flip it in the end, but it is a fantastic substitute while i wait for the v9 to get up and running.

Really, for bass,any of those old Ampeg amps are great. Much of the modern brands are based on Ampeg's sound.

That would be cool to find out Bryce. Once you hve it all fixed up, it hsould be good to go for the next 20 years.

I realize this is a pretty old thread but did you turn the bias's off before you powered it up Bryce? You should always be aware of what the bias is doing when you put a new set of power tubes in an SVT head. I did some pretty bad things to SVT's when I was a kid and thanks to their plate resistor overload protection I never took out a power tranny, only a 2.00 plate resistor. In fact I've never heard of a power tranny going in one, there was a NOS power tranny on ebay several years ago and it didn't sell and the price was reasonable too. The fan blows right on them. Many old heads have at least one of them open which means they are playing on 5 or less power tubes, there is one per power tube, they take the tube out of the circuit by opening the plate supply to the tube, they open from overcurrent and act almost like a fuse. Also the another way to date an old SVT (and many others) is to look at the date on the old electrolytic caps if they are original. I dated my two 70's heads at 76 and 77 by the electrolytics. Can't be too far off from the date of completion. SVT's were made to take a lot of abuse and keep playing. I dropped one 4' onto a concrete sidewalk once and it didn't even blink, just dented a metal corner. I almost had a heart attack though when it happened.

Bob - no, i didn't turn the bias's off..thanksfor your post though, it is encouraging in that my fears of having done major damage are reduced.

it is on the operating table as we speak. i should have it back within the first week of Jan. (not rushing the return date as the work is being done as a favor).

still waiting...should be ready about the time my new (to me) '75 4001 is up and running.
