I didn't want to steal the MERRY CHRISTMAS thread but thought this would be enjoyed by many here.

Interesting song. The lyrics are a bit odd for my taste but...to each his own.

EL&P were one of my favorite bands from the 70's.

ELP were one of the great prog bands from the 70's and I'm quite happy to be stuck there with them. A couple years ago Rolling Stoned mag voted them one of the worst bands of all time....which is why when a copy comes my way, I use it to line my kitty litter box. Seems kind of redundant though.

I don't see HOW in ANY possible they could be rated one of the worst bands of all time. What BS. I think the Kitty Litter Box is TOO good a treatment for that paper!!

Toni, don't be surprised. The same rag voted Kurt Cobain a better guitarist than Steve Howe.
Back in early 1980 I was in a progressive band with some guys who were a couple of years younger than me. They were in their senior year and it was battle of the bands time which was held all day long in the main auditorium. You paid fifty cents to get out of your study hall to come watch and the money went to charity. Your band was allowed to play three songs but there was nothing said about the actual length of the songs. So we went on and opened with Fanfare for the Common Man. Our guitarist played my 4001 an octave up and I played my 4005 for the fundamental to simulate Greg Lake's 8-string. We followed with In the Dead Of Night by UK and finished off with Turn It On Again by Genesis. It didn't go well for the band that came on after us.

That is a GREAT story, a battle of the bands group doing Fanfare....I would have packed up and left if I was in the group that followed you guys! LOL.

Here is a link to my friend Rob's (and musical mentor) site. They do a great version of Fanfare. Funny, they also do Dead of Night and some Genesis.

Rob has this SWEET 1976 4001MG under his bed that he hasn't played in YEARS. I keep trying to talk him into selling it to me but he can't bring himself to part with it.

As far as Kurt Cobain being a better guitarist than Steve Howe, what can I say? I wonder just how old the reporters for STONED magazine really are. I mean no disrespect but c'mon, how can you even put them in the SAME category?

Time to meld a couple of threads here...

We wuz talking about the Kinks on another thread...and I'm reminded of one of Ray's funniest and most sardonic songs, which came out around Christmas of '78 or so (I believe)...

It's called (of course) "Father Christmas", and it's a good sendup of the double standard of Christmas (spirituality/materialism), which in my (and, I'm sure, in Ray's) mind, materialism has been winning for the last 2005 years or so...

Here's what happens to kids who learn the truth about Father Christmas--and about life--too early to cope:

When I was small I believed in Santa Claus
Though I knew it was my dad
