Yikes!!!
Funny how the seller of the second auction says that his bass will turn heads...yeah turn them away!
And his research about the dark stripe for mapleglo basses, only from '73 to '78 LOL
I wonder where he gets his info?!?

Why in the he** would anyone put a removable access plate on the back, when the electrnics are already attached to the pickguard?

The second auction is either a resale or a relist - I remember that black cover with the switched leds at the tailpiece a few months back.

The first one looks to have the DiMarzio (sp?) pickups I put on my initial bass, a used Fender Jazz copy when I was maybe around 17 years old in the late 70's. They look real familiar, and won't at all sound like Ric single coils.

I've never touched the pickups on any other basses I've purchased, *especially* the Rics. My 4001S is completely stock and the newer 4003 just has "extra" vintage tone caps added.

"Frankenrics" get to me.

"...whoever did it must be insane or at least be an absolute idiot. This is a bitter end for a 4001"

I have to disagree. Judging by the wear marks, this bass served its owners very well, it was loved and played a lot. This in itself is a very good end, not bitter, for a bass. A bitter end for a bass, IMHO, is an immaculate museum piece that nobody dares to play.

Come on you guys both of these basses are salvagable, all you need to do is replace the tuners, the pickups and pickguards and there you go, two legit ricks.

But that's somebody with eight years of luthiery experience speaking.

I wouldn't call it a bitter end for a museum piece, but there's no doubt that an instrument that hasn't been played much is rather sad...

Of course when you find a museum piece you can't really trash it either...

Usually, the best playing basses are those old babies with plenty of "worn in" (as opposed to worn out) mojo...
