What I've Learned So Far

I learned the first 4001 I bought was a " Hall of Shame " ebay reject . .........That I really did not know what models of Rickenbacker Chris and Paul were playing on all those great recordings.......I needed to visit this forum almost every day so I could learn what I was really looking for.......(4004)......That the Forum members are outstanding and generous people.......and I still would like to have an S model someday .

I used to think that all guitar makers were pretty much the same sort of operation.
Money was the main motivation, not love of the instruments & care for their reputation.
The more I learned about RIC, the more respect I had for the company & it's product.
It's an extremely rare breed of people who still think that real quality (not to mention value) means something to it's customers.
No amount of ad copy can show you this, it has to be discovered word by word in a place like this, where the members are the customers.

I've also learned that almost no guitar is too far gone, as long as talents like Dale, Paul, & Ted are around & the cash is forthcoming.

Other stuff I've learned here is FAR too much to even begin to list, so a big thank you to everyone here, since pretty much everybody has something of interest to offer others.

This the only forum I know where the guy who owns and runs the company is available to answer questions, and also contributes.

IMHO, Mr Hall is as much of a Ric'o'holic as the rest of us.

JH appears from time to time at the Dudepit also.

I've learned a lot here about how to spot fakers, and the rich variety of variation in old 4001's, well, ALL Rick models.

In the last 5 years I learned that pretty much any Ric bass made after 1986 will make a good 5 string bass ... with a little work ... I learned that oil finish is a good option for a 4001/4003 bass ... I learned to apprecieate the 4004 bass and the hb1 pickup ... I learned the difference in tone of a 500k ohm pot and a 250k ohm pot ... and I learned how to build my own custom basses ... and I learned to appreciate the 2000 series basses ...

I learned (firsthand) that Jeff can turn a 1986 or later into a good 5 string bass!

I bought my 2004 4003 FG from a forum member, he shipped it directly to Jeff, who did his magic, and then shipped it to me. I have never seen my bass as a 4! I would hate this neck as a 4 string, as a 5..........WOW!

I don't mean to disparage the neck. I just happen to be a fan of thin jazz like necks on my basses. After Jeff did the 4-2-5, it feels like most of the 5 string necks I have owned.

I never did like the P bass neck, a little chunky for me.

I don't know about that- you guys (hopefully) spend your RIC time when you're not at work, while I try hard to spend no RIC time when I'm not at work!

That's only because they have a nudie bar, as well as to keep Brian Crisman on his moderator toes.

What I've learned so far here on the forum?

If I answered that question I'd be typing for days. So I'll just say...I'm glad its here. Thanks to Peter, JH, and all who contribute for all their help and knowledge.

JH-I spend my RIC time here when I'm at work and then I play my Ricks when I go home. I can't help it. I'm a RIC junkie.

Wait...there are nudie bars on the Dudepit? I'm outta here!
