Hi, Paul. Yes, I remember that. I usually post more over on VT, but lurk around the Ric forum every now and then. Ric's rule. Enjoy your Shadow!

Paul, in regards to your earlier post on the occurance of checker binding (the only bass to have it after mid-73 is the 4004LK), I beg to differ. The 4002's also came standard with checker binding and I believe they were available from '78 to about '82 or somewhere in there.

Paul-

Howdy! Yeah I was sleeping on that bid for the 4001 FL you scored. Enjoy.

Hi Donald,
I totally forgot about the 4002 basses when I posted. Thanks for correcting and reminding me.Rumour has it that only 187 4002's were made during those 4 years...

Jared,
Thanks for sleeping, hey hey.
I was lucky then.

Correction:

"...a 4003 Shadow with the white-on-black checkered binding would be ultra sexy and cool! But I guess one only exists in my imagination and will never see the light of day".

I meant binding on the headstock of a 4003 Shadow.

Man, no coffee after waking up is quite a head-messing situation. My apology for the error.

Thanks Gary.
Aww, what a beauty!

Does the XLR output socket contain only the bridge pickup signal or function normally like the 1/4" mono jack?

I seem to have read somewhere that it outputs only the treble (or bass) pickup...

Here's a shot of the checkered binding on my 1973 4001. I personally prefer the white background with the black checks in the foreground, as opposed to the black background with the small white checks in the foreground (like the 4002 and 4003 Shadow.

That one I'll have to check on, as I have used it with my Korg D-16 recorder only once so far, and that was for only a short time (that's the only time I have used the XLR jack so far). According to the schematic posted at the RIC web site:

http://www.rickenbacker.com/us/19513.htm

you are correct, only the treble pickup is shown going to the XLR output.

Something else I need to do is to check the weight of the 4002 vs. other 4000 series basses. I have the impression that the 4002 is heavier than a typical 4001 or 4003.

Jon, I agree with you. That style of checked binding is definitely more dramatic:

I'm thinking more in line of "The Great Checked/Checkered Binding Challenge"!

I like both versions myself. Now if that funding fairy would come along with her magic solid gold dust...
