Best example of the mersey beat sound?

Thanks for that song Roy, finally we now all know why Decca turned them down, haha!

This is probably not even considered Mersy Beat but "I'm Telling You Now" by Freddie and the dreamers always seemed to be very close to capturing "the sound" in one song for me.

In answer to your question my view would be that the First two albums Please Please Me and With the Beatles (UK Titles) were good examples as they drew on the stage act for about 505 of the content I reckon, the next albums Hard day's Night, Beatles For Sale still had elements but albums from there on in my view saw them with a more polished sound.

Freddie from Manchester but near enough and yes a good choice, have you ever heard Feel So Blue Bob by Freddie and the Dreamers wasted on B Side of their first release If You Gotta Make a Fool Of Somebody, it was British Beat at it's best and embodied the sound that had such a profound effect on us kids then, in UK and certainly US.

I'll post it if you have not.

No I haven't Roy and would love to hear it. I always thought their sound had such an exciting effect to it, almost leapt off the grooves. I used to love the guitar playing and sound in "I'm Telling You Now"

I know freddie and Bernie Dwyer the drummer have passed away. I have heard conflicting reports that Pete Birell has too, Derek Quinn the lead guitarist became a Sales rep and Roy Crewdson owns a bar in Tenerife or did last year when I was there

I wondered what happened to the lead guitarist Derek Quinn.
This is not the first advert I have found for Freddie and the Dreamers at the Iron Door Club, there are numerous other documentation referring to their appearances.This one is dated Oct 13th 1962.

So they were still some months away Geoff from a recording contract, mind you so were all the Liverpool bands.

I once said to John McNally that record companies signed up any Liverpool group that could put a tune together, his reply I won't print but second word was Off.

However I do think a lot of groups were signed up from that area in the hope that they would have the next Beatles.

You will know far better than I but I am sure based, on the Iron door interviews, that I was privileged to see, that there were bands rated by the kids who went to the clubs like Iron Door, that were just as popular if not more popular than The Beatles but they got the break, others did find fame but a lot didn't.

Peter recently reminded me of a band Lee Curtis and the All Stars, I dug out some of their stuff and was surprised at how good they were based on the bits I have heard.

I am not a Beatles fan but apart from their composing and writing there was just that something that made them stand head and shoulders above the other groups.
Fame and fortune did not effect them in any way I think David Charters (Feature writer for the Daily Post)best describes Lennons visits to the Iron Door " Sometimes John Lennon his tongue fizzing with observations and sly cracks would nosey in with his art school pal Stu Sutcliffe".
Lennon was just the same when they became popular.
I agree with you Roy there is no getting away from the fact that the record companies were signing up groups, hoping for the success of the Beatles.
The searchers and Freddie Starr chose a different route to the top, than all the other groups who came under Brian Epstien.
The thought did cross my mind if Freddie and The Dreamers did in fact come under the category of a Merseyside Group, coming from Manchester perhaps they lived in the vicinity of The Manchester Ship Canal that floes into the River Mersey.Joking apart they were a great group with an unusual sound.
Lee Curtis was a good performer,I have to say I preferred him with the Detours.

Thanks Roy, yes, that is a sound from them we didn't hear over here, it's more rocky than their usual stuff. I would probably not have known who it was if you hadn't have identified it.
