The 13th Floor Elevators

Post by 35012 »

Is there any confirmation that this excellent yet obscure band ever used ricks on recordings? I believe I read something on this forum about a 360/12 converted to a 365 (with the bakelite plugs in the tuner routes) that was once owned by them.

Wow, dust flying everywhere hearing this band again.

Were they a Michigan based group?

Can't remember their big hit. I think it was a cover.

That bakelite conversion RIC was mine. I bought it used in a pawn shop in Kerrville, Texas in the summer of 1985. During that time I used to hang out in Kerrville's only music store. I was told by the store owner that my RIC possibly once belonged The 13th Floor Elevators. I also used to hang out with local Kerrville drummer, David Fair, who was playing in a blues band with a guy named Ronnie Leatherman on bass in 1985. I was later told that Ronnie was one of the bassist's in The 13th Floor Elevators. I didn't find out till several years later that the music store owner was the first drummer in The 13th Floor Elevators but was replaced during the recording of the second album "Easter Everywhere". The lead guitarist of The 13th Floor Elevators in buried right outside of Kerrville in the town of Center Point.

I have searched for photos of that RIC with The 13th Floor Elevators but have had no luck. Hardly no photos of the band exist! I do have a photo of Roky Erickson with a Rickenbcaker 360 from the mid 70's. This RIC photo appeared on one of Roky's early solo albums.

Several years later in 1989, my old 80's group recorded a version of 'You're Gonna Miss Me'.

Thanks for the link Karl. Wasen't able to open myspace, but the rokyerickson site revealed a great old song. Was that the original version?

Any idea who was the 13th's lead singer?

I was a big Roky fan in college. Brings back fond memories.

"Were they a Michigan based group?"

Nope, they were part of the Sixties "Texas Underground".
Got to see a reunion here a few years back, Roky's doing OK considering.
