TORONTO ROCKS !!!
For those who had a chance to view the CBC special on the Toronto Rock Show, I have a question! ( Sorry that it doesn't concern Rickenbacker though!) Ron Wood, on Jumpin'Jack Flash, was playing a funny looking guitar...it looked like an electric banjo and sounded like a mandolin. Can someone tell me what was that strange instrument?

Might it have been one of Ronnie's Zemaitis guitars?

My first bass was a Rickenbacker...
My best bass is a Rickenbacker...
My last bass may very well be a Rickenbacker

Bob-- Ahhh, yes!! Brings back great memories! I felt sure you would be familiar with those guys. I remember seeing them on t.v. about that time on a Cher special(!!!) Yep, they played "Mondo Bondage"! What a scene! I think the guitar player & the bass player were dressed up like 18th century executioners in an old dungeon-- black leather hoods and the whole 9 yards! It was a riot! I laughed for days. Hard to believe now they could get away with doing that on primetime television back then.
Happened to see them again on t.v. a couple of years ago and, needless to say, they're *nothing* now like what they were in 1975. In fact, they'd probably be embarrassed if anyone publicly brought up the old days of "White Punks on Dope". ~LOL~ But it's okay; it is by far the best music they ever did.

I have an old Tubes double album from the '70s that, in addition to all the classics like "I Was a Punk Before You were a Punk", has a great "Crime Medley" that runs through the Peter Gun theme, Perry Mason theme etc. I used to put that on whenever a party needed a jolt of energy and it would always perk things up.
Here's a Coral Sitar pic: http://www.vintageguitar.com.br/guit_23.htm . Jerry Jones makes a repro.
Does anyone here remember the Tubes' appearance on SCTV? It was during SCTV's first year as a 90 minute show on NBC ('81-'82) and it was the first of John Candy's "Gil Fisher, the Fishin' Musician" segments. They did "Sushi Girl" at Gil's Lodge, then later they rescued the "Lola Heatherton" (Catherine O'Hara) special by doing "Talk To Ya Later". Great show!

Jeffery - I wasn't there. I don't mind crowds, but 450,000 was a bit to large a crowd for me.
I had taken my son to hockey camp that day and couldn't get to a TV. I saw a lot of clips on the 11:00 o'clock news, but that was it.
Someone mentioned that a DVD video package of all the performances was going to be released in a month or two. Some of the profits are going to be given to the front line health care workers. Also to the accomodation industry workers who have been layed off during the SARS scare.
Bottom line to all of this is WERE BACK!! Come and visit us, it's SAFE, CLEAN and FRIENDLY!
