Fretless Rick basses sound really nice. Chris Brubeck's talent demonstrates that well. I play my fretless Ricks very much like he does, plucking the strings right at the end of the neck.

But it still sounds good!

It's not a faker at all, Mr Hall has verified this one himself. It also has a bound headstock and is a 21 position fretboard. It has a twin that was discussed here a few years back. That one had been fretted sometime after it left the factory but was, other than that, identical to Brubecks. Both these basses were made around 1970 when the factory was obviously trying out the idea of the skunk stripe and predate the full introduction of the thinner stripe by at least a year(dec 71).

Hi Gerry. I just bought a March 72 4001 (SN starts with LC) that does not have a skunk stripe. Are you sure that Rickenbacker started putting the skunk stripe in ("the full introduction of the tinner stripe") in Dec 1971? I thought it did not go in until way later in 1972 or maybe early 1973 at the latest, depending on stock being exhausted of precut glued-up neck/head stock. I know too that my original March 1971 KC 012 4001 defintely did not have a skunk stripe. But this March 72 does not have one either.

Elys, mine is a Sept 72 & has the stripe. From what I've gleaned over the years hanging around here it started appearing in Dec 71 but like all things Rick, there was that transitional phase as older bodies went through the factory. So there you go, no I'm not sure....

REgardless, it is a great piece of music. Thank you for posting. I guess I will look for a CD with this piece.
Is it a Bartolini for the bridge pick up?
I am good with my fingers and I can do it all night !

So, Rickenbacker actually made some with wide skunk stripes? I thought those were fakes. Hmmmm......
