McCartney/Laine?

Post by myfretless »

What exactly happened between Paul and Denny that caused such an acrimonious breakup that it would still be strong today? Not even the Beatles had such a nasty extracted feud.

I always heard it was something between Denny and Linda, sometimes facitiously about the vegetarian lifestyle, but I never believed it.

I heard that Denny got disgusted with Paul when the whole Japan pot bust thing happened around 1980.

Denny did a tell all interview in some British tabloid. Denny claimed that his comments were taken out of context. Jo Jo Laine had a conversation with Paul telling him how bad Denny felt about the whole mess. I heard Paul invited him to s show he did in Boston in 1990. Denny went, but didn't hook up with Paul.

Nothing here seems that serious that it seems out of the question that they couldn't have reconciled by now...

You're lucky I just swallowed a sip of coffee, otherwise it'd be all over my monitor by now. ;)

Is there still acrimony? Denny speaks extensively on the 25th anniversary CD of "Band On The Run" which came out in '98 or '99.

They were playing together for many years in Wings. Was it about 9 years? That's a very long time to be in a band. It's only natural that they would have disagreements and arguments. Even bitter ones.

Why did Paul stop playing with Robbie McIntosh and Hammish Stuart?

A few years after the split, Denny made some comments about Paul concerning drugs, etc. I have heard 2 different stories from Denny saying
1. He was drunk when he was interviewed
2. His wife was the one that said it.
Macca said in an interview that it was because of Denny's interview, that he & Linda were busted (not in japan), around the time of their trip to Barbados and returning from that trip in England.
There was an interview with Macca in an issue of Beatlefan a few years ago that stated he has forgiven Denny but doesn't need that type of person in his life.

Alex, I liked the Robbie McIntosh, Hamish Stuart, Chris Whitten, Linda, Wix lineup as well. I really wish I could have seen them on the '89 tour, because I love the songs they played from Flowers In The Dirt.

I did see them in Raleigh, NC in '89. It was a great show. They played on a Friday night at the North Carolina State fooball stadium. I will never forget that night. I also saw them at the University of South Carolina stadium in 1993. But that Raleigh show was special.
I recently went back to playing a Rickenbacker bass. Its like meeting an old friend again

Hi Stuart,

I was fortunate enough to see that line up in Phoenix. It was at Sun Devil Stadium in April of '90.

Fantastic show. Just waiting in line to get into the stadium I chatted with people from Mexico City, Milwaukee and Los Angeles. That was interesting all by itself.

I also like Paul's current band. They are excellent as well. I guess he can pick and choose any good talent he wants.

Remember that Chris was gone after the 90 tour. He went on tour with The Dire Straits when Paul finished his World Tour. Blair Cunningham, another ex-Pretender, took over the drumming. I think that group disbanded after Linda was diagnosed with cancer. I thought they were a tight group. Robbie and Hamish both played the same 1997 if I remember correctly. I like his new lineup but alas, not a Rickenbacker to be seen.
