Bryce, you mention having to touch metal to get rid of the hum. Somewhere you either have a signal wire missing or a ground wire not connected or missing or touching a signal point.

i just saw that diagram in another post; very helpful.
fortunately i have a couple other stock 4001's to compare against.
the wiring and soldering is a little messy on this one as someone had been in there to bypass the .0047 and replace the stock .047s.
when i have the time, i'll clean it all up; hopefully that solves the issue.
if i need to replace any wires, what gauge should i use?

completely re-wired the harness as it was pretty messy from when the previous owner replaced the .047's and bypassed the .0047. that should solve the ground issue.
the main problem ended-up being the treble pup after all...seems to be temperamental, it was working great for Sergio after replacing the re wire, but no reading when it got back here. so off it goes back to Portugal to have the master-winder do his thing.
