Is that a replacement fretboard? It's obviously not an S, and the board is unfinished with dots.

The period-inaccurate bridge/tailpiece aside, the fingerboard - probably a replacement. No?
A Rickenbacker bass is much like the Jaguar E car - perennially ultra-fashionable.

Hi Sérgio!!! I think Shaun needs that 72, it is just one digit different from his own 72's serial number. It is an omen and it is meant for him and no one else!

Either the fingerboard was some kind of custom order, or it was a replacement for the original at one point. It appears unfinished, and the dots are unusual for 72.

The bridge is definitely a replacement, so something went wrong with the original bridge, weakness or bend-lift-failure perhaps.

The nut is no big deal, a lot of people did nut replacements when the plastic cracked, or just to get a cool upgrade from a third-party vendor.

Except for that, the flat Grovers, the headstock wings and no stripe, are all "just right" for a 72.

Gorgeous, but it is NOT anywhere as appealing as a Nov 70 21-fretter, Sérgio, yes? Image Image

Well, Faither there looks just like me in the shaving mirror every morning, just after I am finished. Nothing unusual there. Well, my ears are a little bigger, but hey, looks are not everything!! Image

But you are right, what's with Sonia??!! That is just the wrong shade of lipstick, she needs a bit more of a pastel pinkish-brown, with that hair color and all, right?

Other than that, they look just like my wife and I on our way to church every Sunday...

(With tongue so firmly in cheek that it's bitten half-off)(uh,where'd these brackets come from all of a sudden)(can't stop)(Hey Shaun, now you've infected me with that bracket-thing)(c'mon this isn't funny)(go get that 72, Shaun, now, y'hear!)(someone help me find the bridge)(I can't find the bridge)(Where's that confounded bridge

Hello, Donny, and welcome! Are you the Toastie from the RIC forum? If so, I have seen lots of your posts there Image

So is that fingerboard original, y'think, or is it a later non-factory replacement? I figure the tailpiece got infected with Lift and was replaced later in the 1970s.

Did Rick even have an option like that fingerboard able to be ordered in 1971 and 1972? I never saw it back then on the order sheets that my dealer had in 1972, but that doesn't mean it was not possible (unless JH chimes in here to say it was or it wasn't - HE should know) Image

Elys,

Yeh, same fella. That board can't be original. Trying to get further pix of the harness and cavity, but no luck yet.

Hey Donny!!!! How are you doing!!! Fancy meeting YOU here!!!! How's the Dolly getting on these days??? You're the high bidder eh? Small world!

Elys, thanks for the comments re my need for this bass. My only problem at the moment, other than other bidders of course, is the lack of Paypal. Doesn't mean I couldn't sort something out, but it may limit me too much. Even if I could get it, a restoration on this would then need to take precedence over my other pending project, not that that would a problem. It is indeed strange that it's the next digit up from mine; it would indeed be nice if it is a sign!

BTW, sorry about the brackets thing, if I'd have known it was contagious I would have stop posting until I was clear! Image
