I have always dug the way those S/5's look but that spacing is just a little too tight for me. If RIC would have made that neck the same size as the 4004 they would have been perfect. My fivers have good string spacing, 3/8" at the 1st fret, 1/2" at the 20th fret, and 5/8" at the bridge pup. This is just a little tighter than the spacing on a 4001/3.

Here's mine. Too bad the pic doesn't show the figuring in the body very well.

I can see a little bit of the figuring, Dan. It must be awesome in person!

No figuring can be seen on mine!

Mine... a 2000, yes the string pitch takes a little getting used to but a very quick play when mastered. I actually had more trouble with my right hand and the pick hitting the correct string, than with my left.

actually the 4003s5 is perfect for my left hand ... but a little tight for my right hand ... I modify my 5 string Rics to have a spacing at the bridge of 2 1/4" or 2 3/8" ... for me the perfect spacing on a 5 string bass is 2 1/2" at the bridge ...

Yeah, I can see where that would be nice. Maybe some day I will attempt the spread. I never did like the 4003 old neck profile for a 4 string (I'm a 4001er from way back) but somehow it seems right with the 5 string... like I said very quick on the left hand once you get used to it.

When I made the switch from a 4 string bass to a 5 string bass I noticed that I could play faster and cleaner because of the 4003s5 neck and the closer string spacing ...
