My '75 4000 JG is the most comfortable, playable bass I've ever owned. I reach for it ahead of the two '72 4001 basses almost every time.

The 4000CS formerly owned by Marc Seligman and Harry Bridge has now made its way to Oz and it's a very comfortable bass also. I guess that's really no surprise given that it started out life as a '75 4000 JG in the first place!

Darren, Darren, Darren... you're a guitar player, not a bass player. You need to get those sweet basses into a bassist's hands. Just pack them up and send them on to the Zoo. I will promise to play them all dilligently! ;)

Great family portrait.

yeah Darren, I'm really jealous of the JG 4000 - that's more what I was looking for when I got the bass I sold to you...

I would assume that the only way to obtain an "S" Ric would be used right?

Hi Jim,
That would depend on the interpretation of the "S" features. Although the headstock is reversed, the C64 has the classic "S" features, no binding, dot inlays etc.

If the C64 doesn't appeal then I'd say look to the used market.

There's currently a very interesting 4003-S on Ebay that's had v63 parts added to it.

John A, that's my whole problem. I don't know whether I'm a guitarist, a bass player or a drummer! Image By not actually making a decision it means I have a legitimate excuse to continue accumulating more toys. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it!

Harry, I love the 4000CS (thanks mate!), I love my '75 4000 JG and I love your 4003S-8 FG. I bet it sounds like a monster.

S is Best! Tony, the only time I think about my S having a set neck is when I flip it over and look at it. It just doesn't come to mind during playing. Bob, I hope you are enjoying yours as much as I am. Project is looming...

I'd like to +1 Brian's noting of the 4004's unbound body and say that they are the logical progression/evolution of the "S" model. The unbound dot neck along with the comfortable light weight body make these a joy to play. And as John Biscuti has just discovered, the late model Laredo's have a great slim neck profile, and while slightly wider than an "S", they have the nicest necks I've ever played on a rick.

As much as I loved my 4004Ls, the neck just proved to be too wide for me. I prefer what Fender would call B width and the 4004s are 1.75" (Fender's C profile).

I could overlook the reversed headstock on a C64S, but I'd have to replace the TRC with one that points in the right direction.

I can't take all this "S'ing" talk.
Feeling a bad case of RAS coming on!I can't take all this "S'ing" talk.

The width issue of the 4004's is the only thing holding me back on one of them.

Tomg- John and I would like to thank you for being uncomfortable with those Laredo necks....
I remember the first time you put them up for sale, I kept coming back and looking at the pics and thinking....those would make great project basses....and they are, mine should be done sometime in late summer/fall, not sure what John has in store.

Darren, if you play bass like you play the drums and the blues like SRV, keep those basses.

I think yours is a valid story - stick to it!
