Neck question.... 4001v63

Post by moonliner »

Hello All,

I love rics, but most of the models I've played have had very large/fat necks and I like slender necks. How is the 4001v63?

Thanks for your time.

I think the neck size would vary depending on the year it was made. I had a 1999 4001V63 and it had a fat neck-more of a handful compared to other Rics I've had.

My '98 V63 feels just like my '73 4001, nice and thin, just not as thin as this:

The 4004Cii I had was very thick and also wider than my other Ricks, I prefer the thinner and narrower necks for my medium size hands. Image

I prefer the thin necks myself, however the 99fg I have, the neck is on the thicker side...but so well set up, I just love it...

My 1988 is the THINNEST neck I've ever played on a RIC.

My '88 is rather thin also. Thinnest of the 7 V-63's I've owned. The '93 was next thinnest, followed by the '97 and '98s, they were a little thicker, the '99 and '00 were VERY thick. The '00 was a seagreen, btw. Image

My '91 V-63 has the thinnest neck of all my Ricks. The '72 and '73 are close but a bit flatter front to back. My '97 CS has the thicker neck, but it still feels great.

thanks for all the input!
How many years did they do the v63?

Also, (this may be blasphemous to some) if I ended up getting one of the later year models with the thicker neck, could the neck support a trimming to make it thinner?

By the way, the Seagreen v63 pictures i've seen are what made me want one! That color on that bass is just gorgeous!

I've owned two 92 v63's, both have wonderful slim necks and are a joy to play.

My current 92 v63 is my favourite to play.Image

Recently I wanted to buy an '98 v63. Measuring it gave almost the same sizes as my '99 4003. I want to get rid of the 4003 because of the neck so I didnt buy it. There was a topic an this with exact sizes some time ago as far as I know.

Hmmm.... me thinks I need to look into this further.
If anyone can remember where that neck discussion of the v63's is, please pass it along.

My '94 has a thin neck. Not the thinnest of the bunch but pretty darned good.

There was a great discussion here before "Measure your girth" which I can't seem to find now... anyone?
Anyway, it gave specific dimensions taken from the necks of many Ric basses. The '99 and forward, up to the recent slimming ~'06, necks are the fattest. My '00 V63 is a BASEBALL BAT. Luckily it won't be for long... ;-)
