Neck question.... 4001v63

thanks again to everyone for all the info.
Sean, are you having your '00 V63 slimmed down? I was wondering about that myself if I picked up one that happened to have a fat neck.
While I'm at it, may I ask what you think a V63 should go for these days? I know there a lot of factors to take into consideration... just asking for a ball park figure I guess.

My '99 v63 measures out at about 7/8" depth, 1 3/4" width at the nut and about 2 1/4" - 2 3/8" at the 12th fret. The depth seems pretty consistent throughout the length of the neck.

I am going to slim the neck down to the proportions/profile of a '60s bass. I'm having it refinished, so it's the perfect time to do it.
The discussion I mentioned earlier is a wealth of information, on how the profile has changed over the years. Hopefully, SOMEONE knows where it is!
It has simply disappeared from the archive...

Are the necks on the early 90's 4003/V63's as thin as the new 4003/C64 basses.The reason i ask is because i own a '92 4003,and it feels nice and slim.

MEASURE YOUR GIRTH was a thread that I started as I've noticed that the necks of my Rick basses vary in "chunkiness."

My Ricks span from a '73 4001 to a 2006 4003 and include 4001's, 4003's 4003S's, a 4003SFL, a 4004C, a V63 and a C64S . I measured at least 10 of mine to compare, and invited all forumites to participate as well. The thread didn't generate anywhere near as much interest as I thought the topic deserved; only a handful of people ended up measuring their instruments. Only one 60's Rick owner measured(but what a cool bass it is!)

Basically the thread demonstrated that the girth of the 4001/4003/4001V63/4001C64S has increased over the years with the biggest jump being in about 1993 or so. The late 90's and early 2000's seem to be the largest.

I remain convinced that the neck's girth is more important than its front to back thickness, and I am sad that the thread has been deleted. I was planning on reviving and adding to the thread.

I'm pretty sure I checked last week and the thread didn't look like it was all the way at the bottom, ready to be deleted.

Can you bring it back please, Peter?

I can't believe the thread is gone. I know I should have done it earlier, but I was going to print up all of the data this week to save it!

Keith, V63's have been running anywhere from $1750.00 to $2700.00 depending on finish and condition. You should have no problem finding one for around the $2K mark.

Thanks Jeff... that was indeed an awesome thread.
I followed it very closely, and used the data as a guideline for slimming my neck.
For the record, my measurements were 11.8/12.2/13.8... right up there with the FATTEST of them.

My '98 had a big neck, but after the initial strangeness I actually found it very pleasant to play. I didn't really find it slowed me down, and the string tension felt more relaxed than on most 4001s I've played. Although my CS has a much thinner neck, in practical terms it doesn't feel any nicer, and I'd say it's less stable. As stability and perceived string tension are big things for me the big neck wasn't a problem.

It would be nice if Peter could un-delete the thread, but I'll bet its gone forever.

Maybe it was the name of the thread that bugged people. I thought it was funny and would attract interest. Maybe I should have named it "Happy Elf People Surrounded by Daisies Measuring Their Bass Necks for the Common Goodness of Mankind."

I don't know if I'll re-post my measurements. Mine were taken at different times and written in different places. And I don't have a copy of anybody else's measurements.

Also, earlier we measured thickness at the three positions also. The databass is at the link below - any interest in adding to it, or is the girth measurements more important? I will work at entering the Girth data on another sheet in that database.
