Horseshoe/Highgain Hybrid

While I just love my highgain in the bridge postition I also love the looks of the horseshoe. Do you guys think that a highgain could go between a set of shoes? If so, would it sound different? And if so, where can I get just the shoes?

I think it could be done, but youd have to somehow sandwich the shoes between the magnets and the plastic baseplate the pickup is on.....its probably a lot of trouble.... ..if the shoes touch the magnet it could interfere with the pickup........

The modern horseshoes aint like the original ones , more like a high gain - why not just get one of those?

Good luck finding a horseshoe pickup. Seems like everyone has been out of stock for like a year now. If you do find someplace that still carries them please let me know. I have a V63 and a 4003. I don't think the horseshoe sounds anything like the modern high gain. Maybe it's just me, my hearing isn't what it use to be.

I know what you mean. I also had a v63 and i thought they sounded nothing alike, thats why I sold it.

Dano, I'm with you. I have an 85 V63 and a 97 4003. The horseshoe is actually magnetized. Two distinct sounds - I prefer the horseshoe myself!

You can wait for RIC to stock replacements for the 4001C64S. I believe that’s a hybrid – a hi-gain inside a horseshoe. Someone correct me if I’m wrong. You’ll most likely wait a long time though

Mine isn't magnetized, but I love it just the same. I think your right about the stock replacements for the C64. Maybe someday...

Heheh, I've been contemplating on getting a "Gothic Babe", Owen.
It'd be a mint or new 4001/4003 Jetglo...I'd replace the white TRC and pickguard with black ones, change the neck PU to a toaster and replace the rectangular treble PU surround to a horseshoe one. Lots of chrome on black outlined by white, my friend. Gotta make it happen...

Something like this with a toaster and horseshoe surround.

Oh, by the way, I'd replace the knobs with the vintage "black with a white line" ones.

An even better idea IMHO Paul, why dont you "vintage- ise" your fireglo 4003. Dont you already have the toaster? Why dont you put a new pickguard on it, that goes all the way up to the surround, and add a horseshoe surround

Well, I quite fancy those modifications applied to a Jetglo. That's why I would call her a "Gothic Babe".
As for my 4003 FG (yes she's got a toaster), I'm actually quite happy with her sound and look. The white TRC and pickguard are perfect match for the Fireglo finish. Might consider putting vintage knobs on her though. However, thank you for the suggestion.

Hey Paul, As I was reading your post a few back I was thinking what about the knobs and then you go and post it. I've been considering doing what Owen is recommending to my 97 JG. Putting in the toaster and horseshoe and of course adding the vint knobs. Not sure how easy this stuff is to come by these days.

Chris Clayton offers the vintage 5-knobs set here for $13.00.
As for the horseshoes, neither Chris nor Mike Parks has any in stock.

The toaster and vintage knobs alone would already make your '97 JG very attractive, IMHO. A horseshoe may come your way eventually.
As for installing the horseshoe surround, 4 new screw holes would have to be made, but I could live with that...

IMHO, all ricks, no matter what year/era look great as is. I personally would never alter any rick i had (yeah i know its proper ricks parts and all) but i think all of them look nice as is. I think the exception is the red/blue/mapleglo 4003's with black trim . Black trim is nice, but only only on white or black.

All the basses from all eras have their own "personality"
