So here we go: The cracks are repaired, all the hard ware back on, strings set up: WOW! That is the real 4001 growl I was longing for!!!
She looks beautiful with a strong wood grain including a lot of flame and quite some birds eyes.
The cracks are glued for ever, the coloration with the glass paint colour will be corrected a bit with some more buffing, however I can't get rid of the former deep dark stainings by the not so careful repairman.
She also has a nice and slim head stock, which I prefer over the bulbous 4003 one.
The old Grovers still work well.
So overall nice wood and finish, reasonable weight, excellent sound and playability. She really was worth the investment. Someday she will get a bassPU-surround and a hand rest, I hope and some strap locks so she'll never gets dropped!

Yep--I love the gentler transition of this burst. Photographs well, too...even with flash.

Also in my opinion the new FG is a bit to harsh in it transition. Maybe less in the AFG ones? My 1997 4003FG will never become that nicely yellowed as the 4001 is due to the new finishes that use a UV block substance in there, I read somewhere in the forum.

Thanks to Dane Wilder, who provided the surround of the bridge PU, my '74 4001FG project is slowly coming to an end:
before
and after
Now I wait for another "Silva Machine", as Sérgio has transformed my dead '78 high gain neck PU into a Toaster. Just need the Toaster chrome cover for it. Anybody have one for me?
