Anyone play ZZ Top with a Ric?

Post by charlyg »

I pulled out Rio Grande Mud and Tres Hombres today, and the P bass on Waitin for the Bus has to be that way to "fill" up the song. I am pretty sure I could get fairly close to that sound with this "new to me" SVT, 8x10 cab and my 4-2-5. Since I only play praise music ( I wish I was in a blues band!), I guess the bigger question would be, how does the Ric bass make out in a cover band? Blues and Classic Rock is what I know, so those type of covers is what I am thinking of. Mostly P-bass and some Gibsons back then.

I usually play my 4001 and we play several blues songs including Tush, Jesus Just Left Chicago, Blue Jean Blues, The Thrill Is Gone, and Stormy Monday. I don't try to emulate the sound on the record. I just find something I like and have fun with it.
Never ask "how much worse could it possibly get?"

I've played Blues on my Rics for over 25 years, wonderful tones, that suit many styles of Blues. I've flats on my 4003, and Ernie Ball Super Slinkies on my v63 and both get used.

We play Waiting on the bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago too. Like others, I don't try necessarily "nail" the sound but my 4003 does just fine. I'll sometimes use just the neck pick-up to get more of the P bass sound.

Oh, and yes ZZ Top can be played on a Rick. I've been doing it for close to 25 years now. In fact, it'll sound even better on a Rick.
