Strings on a '72 4001

Garret: that is one fine bass guitar indeed. I once owned a '74 and a '79 Ripper, and a '75 Grabber. And yes, I would play Kiss songs on all three of them.
Elys: yes, that Jaclyn. It's "Os Anjos de Charlie".
Mark: You bet she'll burn you like the midday sun!

A Rickenbacker bass is much like the Jaguar E car - perennially ultra-fashionable.
Hey Paul,
None taken and none intended, but you sound like someone who's never played a Gibson Ripper.
I've played Gibson RD Artists and Victory Basses who's necks, (were only slightly thicker than 80's Rick necks), might bring out a comment like that, but my Ripper garnered only major complements from my Rick playing Bassplayer friends.
If you what to slam it on Body Size, that could be credible, but that Ripper was a fantastic Bass.
Hey Elys,
That's 1980 you're looking at. It's also the last timeframe I've ever let myself be caught slamming any Instrument manufacturer. It just sounds kinda weak. And echoing Paul just makes me think you guys need to educate your hands by touching instruments before putting them down.
If you guys have and you just didn't like them, that's totally cool and everyone's opinion's are "great"( that's sarcasm) but that neck on my Ripper felt every bit as good and easy to play as my '72 Rick or my Alembic.
So if you simply prefer Ricks, I'm totally with you.
Hey Sergio,
Not leaving you out. That's right on! Do you have any pictures we can see?

Hey Garret, my three Gibsons, EB0 and EB3, long since all sold, had railroad tie necks that really did not need truss rods. So did the Precisions. It is to that actual experience I speak. Your neck could be thinner, and I never said it was not. I never said anything about your model at all, Garret, or even your guitar. Please do not take it personally.
In speaking to the vendors in general, using the actual instruments I have played and owned, those experiences do qualify and entitle me to speak to the differences in what I have played from one vendor to the next
You perhaps assumed I was speaking of your model in particular? Or your bass in particular? Nothing could be farther from the truth.

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you, and sit in with the band whenever you can, to keep your chops up!
The only Gibson I've had was an early '60's EB3, and it was a joy to play. Didn't care for the tone though.
I played a new Thunderbird at a local store about a month ago, and it had a great neck! Very much like my J-B.

Hey Elys,
Thank you man, it's all good. I truly value the voice of experience.
Maybe my Ripper was a special case, but I remember being surprised by the larger feel of the RD Artist and Victory Basses I refered to. Most Gibsons I've played; Ripper, Grabber, Les Paul Signature, LP Recording, EB's, have all had very comfortable sized necks.
Everyone experiences various Basses differently.
Type written tone is always difficult. I didn't mean for my reply to come across that harshly. Sorry too Elys.
Thanks Kevin.

Maybe there should be a "finger" emoticon, so that when we actually intend to be harsh, there would be no question. "Buddy, if I really meant to diss ya, I woulda given ya the finga..."
Here is where I hide my music:

Want to hear a true confession? I actually bought three EB-series basses because I figured if Jack Bruce could make one sing, so could I. When the first one was not what I expected, I figured I had a one-time dud and bought another. Then a third. Then it was time to buy some more amps for the Rickenbacker, and back on the block went the Gibsons to help pay for the Sunn and Ampeg gear.....
Not to try to get the thread further off-topic, but that Sunn 2000S was the loudest 120 freakin watts I ever heard!!
My SVTs had a hard time keeping up with it, except on the lowest bass notes where the SVTs made the family jewels wobble back and forth. I still have about a dozen or two of the Sunn heads and a few cabinets, from an original 1965-1966 Coliseum PA (ala Beach Boys) to a raft of Senturas, 200S, 2000S, Sonaros, Spectrum I and II, and my prized Chris Squire 1975 Coliseum Lead SS head. Kept all the blue-line SVT gear too that I bought in 1969. But loved that Sunn gear.

Hey Mark,
I can easily appreciate that!
Please don't give me that "emoticon"!
I simply have a high regard for my Ripper and other Gibson's.
Hey Elys,
That's a great story. After my Ampeg B-18N, my next amp was a SUNN Concert Lead 200w Head.
I used it to drive two JBL 15's in Peavey cabinets. Just behind me in this picture.
Small world!
Sergio, thanks for checking!
