I rather believe Geddy Lee and Chris Squire were the ambassadors of a winner combination : Rickenbacker + Sunn. But this kind of tone tended to disappear, due to the 80s/90s SWR sterile sound syndrome, among other things.
Now you have basically two worlds : the vintage one (where Ampeg is the leader with his tubey products), and the modern-sterile one (the SWR way). In between, no more room for Sunn, Kustom, etc. Too bad, they were kind compromises.

I gotta tell you in my advancing years and no longer willing to move tons of equipment days...

While my Rick isn't here yet, I have a few different basses and for convienance I bought a Hartke kickback. Everything I plug in just sounds great with a basic flat eq. My Sunn still works but, that'll never leave my garage again.

It all depends on what you're after. I also have downsized my equipment. After owning Sunn's, SVT's, Ashdown, etc., I now have an Ampeg B-100R. I really have a nice tone with it, and it's easy to carry out. But when you're in search of the ultimate sound, nothing can replace the headroom and power reserve of a big rig, IMHO.
Though, for my purpose, I'll go back to a big rig only if I absolutely need it. As of today, my B-100R is quite enough for what I do.

with a line 6 bass pod or a tech 21 sans amp you can get a sound with a real personality out of a clean and sterile amp ....

I think ampeg is better than sun ever was ...

Also mesa makes some great bass amps ... a little pricey though ...

SWR and GK are ok but they seem to lack personality ... if you play an active bass with big soapbar pickups into those amps you might as well be playing a synth bass midi thing as a real bass with real strings and real wood ...

I know this forum has excessive eBay links, but check out this Sunn head:

Also, check out the T. Don't think I could fit into a medium though.

That Sunn head looks like a 2000S except smaller with less tubes, but is the same style, also I think the 200S head was the same style. I've never heard of that one. Sunn tube heads had a nice sound.
I opened for one of the young blues guitar players a few years ago, (forgot his name, Alzheimers, haha) and his bass player had one of those 1200 watt Sunn heads with piles of Speakers, he also had a 300 watt Sunn tube head for a spare. Their traveling sound man was nice enough to compliment me on the sound of my SVT.
Ampeg makes all kinds of solid state heads nowadays, all the way up to a 1350 watt RMS. head.
I heard that Fender was in negotiations to buy George W. and Chile.

Hello Marc, You'll have to excuse me I'm a little behind the times here. My computer was infected with the lastest worm virus and has just recovered. Congradulations on your purchase. That makes 3 of us that I know of that have 4001V63JG's here! A very nice bass (one of RIC's finest). I'm certain you'll be very happy with this bass. Mine is a '98 model. Sure the shoes are not magnatized but I love her just the same! I'm working on getting a black pickguard and TRC for her. Should be here any day now. I'll post some pics when it's completed. Also, welcome to the board!
