The Who Playing the Beatles

This was test footage for "the kids are alright" but it never got in there which is such a waste, they clearly are having a good time here.

Amazing is right. I think my cat sings better than that.

Are you sure that is The Who? It sounds worse than a third rate garage band. Image

And Townsend had the nerve to comment on the Beatles musicianship? Granted, I know it was only a jam session, but Pete's ridiculous attempt at a guitar solo was awful. This is one of the guitar "greats"?

For what it's worth...

...over the years, I've developed the theory that the more "original and imaginitive" a guitarist is, the worse he is at trying to do other peoples' material!

My last bass may very well be a Rickenbacker

Alex, watch this, this comes from the same session, you can see it because of Moonie's beard and Townshend's amp set up.

That was a much better clip! Their singing is at least in the ballpark, but Pete's atempts a leads were just awful, both in contant and sound quality.... on the other hand he does do a pretty good duck walk which was sorta like "Chuck Berry gets a hot-foot".

I don't know, I kind of liked it. Clearly, they're just goofing off--John and Paul did the same thing, look at some of the Let it Be clips--Of course, I may a bit biased, the Who and the Beatles are my two favorite bands.

Yeah, Pete isn't sounding or playing great, but I don't that was the point. At this point in the career of the Who, it's not like they had anything to prove.

Paul McCartney once said the difference between Wings and the Beatles was that the Beatles were bad in private, where no one else could see...maybe that applies here too.

yup, the Beatles at their worst are still better than most groups and that certainly includes The Who who I've never liked anyways (except for a few 'Tommy' moments but to me thats the exception that proves the rule).

Just further evidence of my belief that drummers should never sing. Takes their attention away from their real job. ;-)

The Who include a few covers in their box set (including Saturday Night's Alright) and the results are a lot better.

But as Kent's wordless post above alludes to, The Who were (are) the real deal. And Live At Leeds is probably one of the top twenty albums of all time.

PS: Gonna see The Who next month in DC.

I've always liked The Who. Peter T. is a great songwriter, and a pretty good riffmeister too. Those vids are truly awful! While Live At Leeds is a great live album, I'd nominate Quadrophenia as an example of The Who's best work. Keith Moon never sounded better.
It's a masterpiece, IMHO.
