Bass Guitar Mag

Post by rickde »

Guitar World Mag now has a new Bass Guitar Mag and I recently picked-up the premier issue. A couple Ric pics in there. One of Les Claypool w/a 4001 or 4003. The other is of Metallica's old bassist Cliff Burton playing a 4001.

Their buyer's guide had a nice factory-tour article a while back - good stuff.

John: Do you still have the article?

Rickde is talking about a brand new mag called Guitar World's Bass Guitar, "devoted to the power & glory of heavy Bass Guitar!".

John is talking about an excellent article in Bass Player, a different mag. "Inside Rickenbacker" ran in the February 2002 issue. Just the little pic showing JH with all the basses was worth the cover price.

Thanks for setting me straight, Dave.

Peter - No, I flipped through it at a news stand when I was in an airport recently. . .worth every penny!

It's the March 2003 Bass Gear issue by Bass Player mag.
The 3-page factory tour is nice.

For sharing with my friends here, I hope I'm not violating any IP law posting scans. (Peter, please pull them if I do.)

Do you subscribe to Bassplayer Paul? I did up until last month and one of the many reasons I don't anymore is that the annual Bass Gear issue used to come with the subscription.
Another is I got tired of not seeing or hearing about Rics in it, it seems to me they are a very advertiser driven magazine, they push the heck out of whatever is new on the scene, they try to be all things to all people and I don't think they are doing a very good job at it, maybe it is time for a few niche driven bass magazines. It is really the only thing on the block, I'd like to see some competition. OK, done b!tch!ng.

I didn't see this new article, but did see the other one from Feb. 2002, I was a little disappointed that it wasn't more in depth, I think they owe Ric big-time after all the junk that they have had over the years, namely guitars names after car párts and their clones, like maybe an over view of all the Ric artists and models over the years, and what a huge contribution they have made to the music community. Of course when you have a staff that is probably all in their twenties and thirties and plays $5000.00 designer basses, this is what you get. (I apologize to anyone still in his twenties or thirties, I am just jealous), guess I wasn't done b!tch!ng.
They even had the gall once to show all Les Claypools' "odd ball" basses and among them was a 4003 given to him by Geddy Lee. Imagine that? A 4003 an odd ball bass?

Well, I guess a Ric bass would be considered an oddball bass due to the mass produced guitars that tend to flood the market today. I'm hoping that they meant "oddball" in a good way. Meaning, that it's odd to see a manufacturer that cares enough to spend more than enough time to "go the extra mile" to build quality to every single individual instrument that gets shipped. It's just "odd" (In a good way) to see a company who is dedicated to see only the best of the best gets to their customers. I bet that's what they meant by "oddball".

No subscription, Bob.
I just picked up that March 03 Bass Gear issue when browsing a magazine shop one day. Yes you're right, those mags contain too many ads and not much else. Actually, in regard of a RIC factory tour article, nothing beats the one done by Bunny Bass so far.

Bunny Bass with John Hall Feb.2001

You jelous of people in their 20's and 30's?
I envy people in their teens and 20's.
Man, I'll be 40 in 2 years and the fact scares me! Luckily, bass playing has been helping me retain my "youngness".

Hey, nothing bad with oddballs. Don't wanna be the same with most players playing Fender , Music Man/Ernie Ball and P/J bass clones anyway.

I don't think they meant it either as a compliment or as an insult (I took it as an insult), I think it was just whoever wrote the articles' ignorance, it was with a bunch of weird 60's Japanese basses and stuff like that, stuff that you would pay $75.00 for in a pawnshop. I should think that the editor would catch something like that. I have not liked the direction the mag has taken the past few years so that was just another resentment on my part. I do like the occasional article though and the Ric factory tour was nice to see, at least they ackowledged that Rickenbacker still exists.
Paul I was just joking about being jeaulous of twenties and thirties, really it's the teen-agers I'm jealous of, LOL And thanks, I will check out that article on TI's in BunnyBass, that JH article was really good.
