Cold War Kids

Post by jaybic »

Caught Jimmy Kimmel's show last night. There was a band call Cold War Kids. The bassist was playing what looked like a Burgandyglo 4003. It had 1" spacing and triangle inlays.

They are from Whittier, Ca. I went to high school with the drummer. Next time I talk to him I'll see if I can get him to get the serial so I can get the exact date of the bass.
No, I don't play the sax.

I'd say with skunk stripe visible that's a 75 to 79 4001 deluxe.

I saw them too, though there was audio from 4 stations up at the time so I didn't get a good listen. Immediately noticed the Rick bass... sharp or pathetic?! Image

I saw them a few months ago. I was into the first few songs, then they kinda lost me. It was a good night for Rickenbacker basses, though. My friend's band, Fielding, opened up for them using the lefty 4003 MG I convinced him to buy.

Sounds like half of my old band - Harrison-Fielding.

The song "hang me up to dry" has a nice little intro with the Ric. Anyone have any suggestions on how to get that particular sound?

I'd venture to say: played with a softer pick but a hard attack, a bit of grit, and some reverb.

I liked 'Passing the Hat' best of the 4 tunes.

From the picture Jaybic posted, I'd have to agree that looks like a 70s model 4001, also looks like a Fireglo. Could just be the picture though.

I think that the band was on Conan O'Brian last night; I tried taking a picture of the TV, but I don't think it came out well.

Yeah... they performed "Hang Me Up To Dry" on Conan last night. Interesting aesthetic.

Definitely noticed the 4001... and the skunk stripe was clearly visible through the big 'ol bare spot on the back of the bass!

The bass came across as more of a Ruby on the TV... but then, it's an old TV.
My first bass was a Rickenbacker...
My best bass is a Rickenbacker...
My last bass may very well be a Rickenbacker
