So how does the tone of the 2000 series basses compare to that of the 3000 series?

I've never played a 2000 series, but I own a 78 3001. I'd venture to say that the 3000 series is more "organic" & less "active". Mine is real woody - kind of a ****** off P-Bass.

Chris, how is it routed under that not-very-elegant (IMHO) pickguard? With a white 330-style pickguard it would look better.

I had one of the extra long vintage trcs ... I hated it ... I shortened it but still didn't like it so I traded it in for a normal one from Ric ...

For the record mine is a 3001, not a 3000. The route is actually pretty small to have a pickguard of that magnitude over it. It's only the p/u cavity to the control cavity. Admittedly the 3000 series is clunky & not as elegant as the 4000 series but I like 'em.

Ilan, the photoshop job you did looks a lot like a Glen Frey signature series bass!

Ilan, I've got to say I really don't like the 'new' pickguard, and think the real one is pretty cool, sorry.

Love the idea of virtual mods though...

doesn't the existing 3000/3001 pickguard hide the routing for the pickup and wires?

It does. Maybe a pickup surround can help (like the one that Pickguardian makes).

I love that bass - it's a backbreaker (almost 13lbs), tone for days though. A sleeper for sure.
