I had a 2000S and two 2000S cabs with JBL D-140's in them at separate times though, ran a 200 watt Marshall Major head through the two cabs, now that moved some serious air. The 2000S heads are either 120 or 150 watts, never liked them, not much of a tonal range. The Marshalls were much louder and sounded better, not much of a tonal range either but sounded great out of the box. I wouldn't mind getting another 2000S head now though.

Jared, are you interested in getting rid of that offending Sunn 2000S? I'll fix it......
Bob, the Sunns don't have much of a tonal range as compared to an SVT, because they don't have that active midrange boost like the SVT, but they can be made to sound quite good. You just need the right cabinet with them. Something with a couple efficient JBL's or EV's is good, and it benefits from smaller tweeters with a crossover network too, as I've discovered by adding some 5 inch speakers to my little ported 1x15 cabinet for my 200S.

Well the tone network is setup to be flat with everything to zero in the Sunns. The cabinet is all important for the Sunn sound though. I've tried mine in my SVT cabinet and it sounds flat and lifeless as you describe. As soon as a switch to a JBL cabinet with a couple of 15's in it and the port like Sunn used then it wakes up. It is a different animal than the SVT though, so you cna't expect it to do what an SVT will. It takes a little experimentation and the right cabinet....
I used to use mine through a big single 15 bottom most of the time, a V4-B head sounded lousy through it also unless I really cranked the lo mid which I was unable to do with the Sunn, probably was the cab. I don't remember if I ever plugged it into an Ampeg cab. I think most (all?) amps should be set up to be flat with tones set at zero, my complaint was that the tone controls didn't do a hell of a lot when turned up or down and the tone contour knob didn't do much either.
