Harrison's Sound On "Let It Be"

Post by sneakers »

I was watching "LIB" last night, wondering how George got that sound he was using in the studio half the time. Generally, he was using the Rosewood Tele and it almost sounded like he was running it through a Leslie speaker cabinet. Anyone have the low down on this effect?

I believe he was using a Leslie for most of that session, hence the sound you are describing. Its a good sound.

Harrison used a Leslie quite often from around `68 onwards. In "Let It Be" you might see the Fender "Vibrosonic" Leslie cabinet. It looks very similar to a Fender speaker cabinet but plugs into the back of your amp and you can switch between your stock amps' speakers or the Leslie speaker. Fender/CBS owned Leslie during that time.
Both George and John liked using a Leslie'd guitar from `68-70. Listen to the guitar on the chours of "She's So Heavy". That's a guitar thru a Leslie. It kind of blends in with the B-3 on that track but still very prodominate.
Anyway, the lead on "Let It Be" is the guitar into either a silverface Deluxe or Twin into the Leslie cabinet(I'm betting on the Deluxe though for the distortion.)

The Fender "Leslie" has a spinning piece of styrofoam to achieve that effect. Saw one on ebay about a year ago.

What would the correct terminology be for the Fender "Leslie"? Can I achieve the same effect through one of those Hughes and Kettner Rotosphere units?

I believe that would be "Feslie".

Greg -- LOL "It's a good sound". A bit of an understatement! I've also wondered what the best substitute for an actual Leslie, or Feslie (LOL) speaker would be. I've seen the H&K, but they're big bucks for a pedal that I would not use that often.
