John and gang, "The Bass Book" by Bacon and Moorehouse states that the 4001S (initial version) was out from 1961 to 1969. It was "known as Model 1999 in UK (1964-1969)"
So I think John is correct. The model number was simply different in the U.K. McCartney's Ric would probably be a 4001S officially (just a difference in model name) as it was never imported to the U.K for sale. He got it in the U.S.

Charly, I'm shocked! There's lots of early Floyd footage with Roger using this bass. He used it exclusively AFAIK up until 69ish when it became unplayable from a bowed neck. IIRC it was the clip for See Emily Play in which he used it as a cricket bat. I haven't been able to find out what became of it (or Entwhistles either).
1999 was the R-M stock number for the 4001S. All the 60's models were RM1999's.
McCartneys is a 4001S which was made for him by FC Hall who was keen to exploit the then new contract for these models he had just signed with Rose, Morris. A very astute move on his part.
