The finger rest's (or, more accurately, the "tug bar") intended purpose is to sort of pull on with your fingers while plucking with your thumb. Not many players play this way anymore, so it's become sort of an anachronism.
In my band's wide-ranging repetoire, there are some songs when that tumb-plucking style was appropriate, and the finger rest was used accordingly. However, after a particularly wild gig, I busted my thumb wide open on it's sharp edge. Off it went!
I also think they look really cool.

David you can ask anything you want (within the bounds of good taste). I have never found a need for them - some folks do. I guess it is kind of like the bridge pickup cover. You like 'em or you don't. When playing, if I rest my fingers it's usually around a glass of beer or holding my wife's hand...

I don't know why David but this notion just struck me. A family that plays together stays together.
Great pic btw.

Damn man - groupie, roadie, beverage fetcher, sound tech, image consultant... you don't pay her enough! Just kidding - like I said a keeper and lovely to boot. Hope you do some serious doting when not playing.
Whoops forgot again - on thread - with her background you should have asked the finger rest question to her. She probably would have known the answer...

David,
Nice pic, and lovely Fireglo, you three make a nice couple !
I just realised that with this picture you and your wife have demonstrated another really good use of the Horseshoe surround, it's clearly preventing your wife's dress from touching the strings and thereby interfering with your playing, outstanding !!
